Agent to hold talks, Liverpool keen to sign €20m star in January

Martin Montoya transfer

Liverpool are seemingly interested in Barcelona’s right-back Martin Montoya, who has surprisingly dropped down the pecking orders at the club under Luis Enrique.

The 23-year-old has been on Liverpool’s radar for quite some time now but the Spaniard chose to commit his future with Barcelona by signing a long term contract in June. As a result of which his release clause has bumped to €20m.

Montoya was supposed to become the next Dani Alves (he still can) for Barcelona, however, under the new management he has struggled to cement his position in the team and is now used as a third choice right-back by Enrique.

According to reports from Catalan newspaper Sport, several European heavy weights like Inter Milan and Bayer Leverkusen have shown an interest in him, but it is Liverpool who are keen to exploit his situation by bringing him to Anfield in January, possibly on loan.

Sport exaggerated a bit in their report by saying the player is “angry” with the way he has been treated by the club. However, his agent, Juan de Dios Carrasco, has confirmed that rumour surrounding his client’s future is false and that Montoya is not angry with his current situation. However, he has hinted that he would hold talks with the Catalan club in the next few weeks.

Martin has not given the club an ultimatum or anything like that. He is calm and focused on working at his maximum as always. We will decide his future after we have spoken calmly with the club in the next few weeks,” he said

Montoya has made only one start for the Blaugrana this season, so he has every reason to feel aggrieved about his present situation. Liverpool on the other hand have already signed right-back Javier Manquillo on loan from Atletico Madrid in summer, but the form of Glen Johnson and the injury concern of Jon Flanagan may force Brendan Rodgers to delve into transfer market for Montoya, provided he is available for transfer.
