Liverpool to raise bid for left-back after initial offer rejected

After securing Lazar Markovic from Benfica, Liverpool have shifted their attention towards signing a quality left-back. The Reds are heavily linked with a move for Sevilla’s Spanish left-back left-back Alberto Moreno but are finding it hard to negotiate a deal for the 22-year-old.

This week, officials from Liverpool flew to Sevilla to conclude a deal for Reds striker Iago Aspas. The Spaniard has joined Sevilla on a season long loan, with the La Liga outfit holding the option of signing him permanently next season.

Liverpool might have also discussed about the possibility of signing Alberto Moreno in that meeting with Catalan newspaper Sport claimed yesterday that Liverpool had offered €23m for Moreno, which they believe was enough to secure the deal.

However, English press feel that Liverpool are unwilling to match the asking price for Moreno, thought to be in the region of £20m, as a result of which attempts are being made to look at other possible alternative options. According to the The Times, Liverpool had lodged an £8m offer for Swansea left-back Ben Davies, which was rebuffed.

The Merseyside outfit are hoping to make the 21-year-old their fifth significant signing of the summer and are prepared to raise the bid for the Welsh left-back, who has also caught the attention of North London club Tottenham Hotspur. Jose Enrique, who missed almost whole of last season through injury, has regained his full fitness but Liverpool feel the need to add another quality left-back to cover that area.

Well, Davies is certainly not the high profile name Liverpool fans probably want to see, but Brendan Rodgers knows him very well and feels the player has the potential to establish himself as a regular for the Anfield club.

  1. Incompetent idiot ayre will probably pay double what Swansea want,Davies is good at defending but gets a nose bleed if he goes past the halfway line. Not impressed with any of Liverpool’s signings this transfer window, buying AVERAGE PLAYERS from MID-TABLE clubs will cost Rodgers his job at the end of Premier League season 2014/2015.

    • Hi Tom, I’m struggling to remember when we last bought an already established World Class player and I’ve followed Liverpool for 35 years.

We always seem to buy players who have shown potential and then made them great.

It does worry me a little that we seem to think that Southampton have all the answers but overall I like the players we have bought in.

Lambert will work for us, Can is more support to Gerrard and will come good next season, Lallana will settle in perfectly and Markovic prefers left but has flexibility so again I think we will have 2 flyers with him and Sterling.

My only worry is are they more for the future and not for the now.

      • I’ve been watching Liverpool since the late 70’s at Anfield, and the players being bought never make a big enough impact :- Assaidi Allen Borini Aspas Alberto Yesil Ilori Sakho Mignolet / And this transfer window :- Lambert Can Lallana Markovic !!! Could we have bought all the signings this transfer window without European Football ( YES ) Then why buy more AVERAGE PLAYERS,because FSG lack ambition by not buying and paying Quality or World Class players prices.JESUS only Sturridge & Coutinho have been any good, and one is injured for about 2 or 3 months out of the season / And the other inconsistent.

      • Don’t forget about Jordan Ibe, that boy is going to push the others really hard this season. It’s no wonder Aspas is going out on loan with the likes of Ibe coming through quickly.

    • Sorry, but have you actually seen Ben Davies play? Nosebleed after the halfway line? I’m wondering what actual Swansea matches you’ve ever seen! Ben Davies is an excellent all round footballer. It’s more important that we do have defenders that can defend first, but Davies is a very skilful player on the ball and does possess very good attacking qualities.

  2. If we spend £20m on Moreno we are basically telling Enrique he is leaving or is 2nd choice, we may get decent money for him but doubtful due to coming back from a serious injury.

If Enrique starts then £20m for a back up, no chance.

Davies or Bertrand, while not World Class are good defenders, and I am confident that Rogers would bring them on, in the same way Flannaghan has improved.

I would rather save some money and get 1 or both of them in, then decide if we keep or cash in on Enrique.

  3. Sevilla are playing hard game on us because they have known that B.R. likes sticking to any player he has set his heart on. I would prefer him signing Rodriguez at left back or Betrand. Rodriguez is far better than Moreno. Betrand can even turn a great lb for us. B.R. needs to change strategy a bit to get us good signings are bargain prices. YNWA. I love liverpool!!!

  4. I am super excited about the signings we have made this far.

Two established PL players in Lallana and Lambert. Two young players with a lot of potential in Can and Markovic. Add to that our youngsters who are ready to take their chances in the first team like Kelly, Suso, Ibe, Texeira, Rossiter, Smith, Mclaughlin, Dunn, Wilson, Jones, Williams, Kent etc..

It all spells exciting times ahead.

A CB and a LB and we are ready to challenge again, on all fronts this time round.

Walk hard and you will never walk alone.
Whiners always walk alone cause no one can stand them.

    • Lambert & Lallana have had one decent season each in the Premier League, they have both come from the lower leagues…
