Liverpool to make swap swoop for Tottenham winger in January?

According to the Daily Mail, Liverpool are interested in Tottenham winger Aaron Lennon, and will offer £7m plus out of favor winger Jermaine Pennant for Lennon in January.

Lennon has gotten off to a very good start this season, and he was recently the subject of reported interest from Real Madrid.

Liverpool already have no shortage of players to occupy the flanks right now, so one might question why Lennon would even consider going from somewhere he’s in the starting XI almost every time out to being a part of a rotation. Well, besides the ability to win the Premier League and Champions League, Pennant is likely on his way out of Anfield before long, and Ryan Babel could soon follow.

Rafa Benitez’s rotation has room for many, but it hasn’t had much room for Pennant, who’s made only four appearances this season. At the present, he’s not worth the £6.7m that Liverpool paid for him in 2006, but considering that Harry Redknapp has previously had an interest in him, Redknapp could consider a deal that includes Pennant.

However, if I was Redknapp, I’d be thinking more Ryan Babel than Pennant if this deal was going to be a reality for both sides. Sure, the amount of cash he’d likely receive in the deal would be less, but if Babel unleashes his potential, he could be an immediate fixture in Tottenham’s starting lineup. Whether or not Benitez would consider offloading Babel in January is another story, but that might be the only way he can get Lennon.

  1. im afraid any notion of part swaping babel is silly, espescialy when you say we could add money. i think babel is worth much more than that and rafa knows it,he is also a player he will show patience even if he says he can find him frustrating. i remember a certain ronaldo being frustrating look how he turned out babel is pure class and class always shows through in time period.

  2. lennnon will be great a addition to the squad, though i think rafa should promote hammill…

Maybe but there’s no quality among the lot of them!

As for Babel, isn’t he pursuing a Rap career? He’s 22 (today) and hasn’t delivered on his promise. He’s way behind on his timeline for maturing into the finished article. My bet is he doesn’t make it as an elite player.

  4. Spurs would be crazy to let Lennon go, he is in the form of his life at the moment and Babel or Pennant would not be a suitable replacement at all.
