Javier Mascherano signs contract extension with Barcelona till 2018
The Argentine’s future was hanging on the balance with the 29 year being touted with a possible return to former side Liverpool while Napoli had also been linked with the player over the past few months.
However, new manager Jose Enrique who took over from the departing Tata Martino had previously claimed that Mascherano would likely be the captain of the team in his tenure and that Barcelona would play an attractive style under his reign.
It is confirmed that Mascherano’s new contract has a whopping buyout clause of €100m (£81m) making it virtually impossible to attract the player away from the Spanish giants.
Mascherano who has featured close to 200 appearances for Barcelona since joining the club in August 2010 from Liverpool has played the majority of the past season out of position as a make shift centre back for the Blaugrana.
The central defensive midfielder will play a key role for Argentina in the upcoming World Cup in Brazil as the Albiceleste enter the showpiece event as one of the favourites to lift the coveted cup at the Maracana on July the 13th.
