Liverpool could make a €30 million (£23.5m) move for Paris Saint-Germain striker Ezequiel Lavezzi during the January transfer window.

The Argentine forward was strongly linked with a move to both the Reds and Premier League rivals Chelsea over the summer before remaining in the French capital.

French newspaper Le 10 Sport have today reported that the 29-year old was close to agreeing a deal with German Bundesliga side VfL Wolfsburg.

The report says that the German side had agreed a €4.5 million-a-year contract with the World Cup finalist but pulled out when PSG were demanding a €30 million transfer fee.

Lavezzi’s future are the Parc des Princes remains uncertain as the player appears to want to leave after rejecting a new contract offer in September.

Liverpool are believed to be keen to add to their attacking options.  Daniel Sturridge has been injured for the past two months and not featured since 31 August for the Reds.  The other three strikers Brendan Rodgers has used this season have yet to score a single goal between them in the Premier League – Rickie Lambert, Mario Balotelli and Fabio Borini.

The Northern Irish manager admitted that a top four finish is his main objective this season and a new striker would certainly help his side’s chances after looking weak up front in recent weeks.  Liverpool have scored in only one of their last five games in all competitions – shut out twice by Real Madrid, held 0-0 at home by Hull City and losing 1-0 at Newcastle last weekend.
