Lucas had earlier said, “In the summer there was also the interest of Naples. Benitez asked again for my purchase. My goal is to play with continuity. I have great respect for Liverpool, for my teammates and for the fans, but we’ll see what will be the best solution for all.”

Lucas was signed by Benitez from Brazilian side Gremio in 2007 for just £5m during his reign at Anfield. The midfielder initially struggled to make an impact for the Merseyside giants but later became an integral part of the side. Lucas then signed a long term deal with the club while Kenny Dalglish was in charge.

However, under Brendan Rodgers Lucas has fallen down the pecking order behind Joe Allen, Jordan Henderson and new signing Emre Can at Anfield and his future appears to be away from Merseyside. Naples based media outlet Napoli Style  have quoted the reputed Italian journalist Alfredo Pedulla that Lucas could finally sign for the Partenopei in the upcoming January transfer window.
