Liverpool are set to continue their busy summer recruitment programme as the Telegraph reports that the Anfield side are on the verge of securing a £12.5m deal for Southampton defender Nathaniel Clyne.

The Reds already had a £10m bid rejected last month but they have now offered an initial £10.5m which will rise to £12.5m. Manager Brendan Rodgers is hopeful that the latest proposal is enough to persuade Southampton to sell the right full back.

Liverpool are looking to sign a right-back in the summer following the departure of Glen Johnson and see Clyne as the ideal replacement replacement. Also, the repetitive injuries to Jon Flanagan is a major concern while Andre Wisdom is inexperienced to fill in the slot.

The report states that Southampton value Clyne at £15m but the English defender is open to the prospect of a new challenge on Merseyside. Manchester United were also interested in the player but ESPN reported that the Red Devils dropped their pursuit of the player at the end of May, leaving Liverpool as the front runners to secure Clyne’s services.

Should Clyne make his move, he will join his former team mates Dejan Lovren, Adam Lallana and Rickie Lambert at Anfield, the trio who were a part of Southampton’s mass exodus last summer.

Liverpool have been pro active with their summer signings this time out having already signed Danny Ings, James Milner apart from Adam Bogdan and Joe Gomez. The Reds also announced their capture of Brazilian attacking midfielder Roberto Firmino from Bundesliga side Hoffenheim just yesterday.

These certainly are exciting times for Liverpool.
