Liverpool are looking to do some business in the late hours of the January transfer window, as the Reds are preparing to make a move for Danny Ings and are willing to loan him back to Burnley for the rest of the season.

Ings has only six months left on his contract and naturally attracting interest from top clubs like Tottenham Hotspur, but Burnley are determined to keep the forward beyond Monday’s deadline.

Tony Barrett of The Times writes that Liverpool want to conclude the deal now rather for wait for him in summer, when competition for him will be high. Rodgers view Ings as a player of potential, one who can provide competition for places next season.

It’s a good opportunity for Burnley as well to cash in on the player without actually losing the player this winter.

Meanwhile, Daniel Sturridge is back in the squad for the Barclays Premier League match at home against West Ham tomorrow after a five month absence with calf and thigh problems.

Rodgers believes that if Sturridge had been available all season, Liverpool would not have been in this position today, rather should have been in the top four by now.

“No question,” Rodgers said. “It’s had a huge impact. The team struggled for a few months, but thankfully we’ve nailed down a way of working and returned to our ideals.”

Rodgers also believes that Sturridge will fit seamlessly in Liverpool’s 3-4-3 system and its variations. The new system has resulted in a marked improvement in Liverpool’s performance and results in general.
