Liverpool lead the race to sign Real Madrid left back Fabio Coentrao according to the Sunday Mirror.

Fabio-Coentrao-Real-MadridThe Portuguese international is out of favour at Santiago Bernabéu and according to Tom Hopkinson of the Sunday People Liverpool are in pole position to sign the £11.5million rated left-back. The reds face stiff competition from Manchester City and Monaco.

Coentrao came close to signing for Manchester United in the January transfer window but the deal was blocked by Carlo Ancelotti after Real Madrid failed to sign Sevilla left-back Alberto Moreno.

The Los Blancos defender has made only 7 appearances this season and looks set to leave the La Liga giants. Brendan Rodgers is not keen on keeping Aly Cissokho after he has struggled to impress him. Talksport claims that the French back is set to sign for Serie A giants AC Milan.

The emergence of young fullback Jon Flanagan is the only silver lining for the reds, while Jose Enrique has missed most of the season due to injury.

With the reds returning to the Champions League next season Brendan Rodgers is keen to bolster his fullback options and has identified Fabio Coentrao as his primary target. Reports suggest that Liverpool have contacted his agent Jorge Mendes last week.

It remains to be seen where Fabio Coentrao will play his trade next season. Interestingly there is nothing in Spain suggesting any such reports, so we highly doubt the veracity of the Sunday People’s coverage.
