Liverpool owners get it right for once
As Rafa himself has said, the owners and the chairman are responsible for the delay in getting Barry over to Anfield, and in this case you have to admit that, like them or not, they might have a point.
Sure, you should back your manager in the transfer market but for Liverpool to pay 18m for a midfielder without getting Alonso out of the door (when Alonso is as good if not better in a central role) is sensible on a financial and team level. Plus there are cheaper and faster (yes, you know, pace – something that Liverpool have lacked on the wings) options available to Liverpool and if you’re going to spend 18m might as well bring in a specialist.
Rafa’s got every reason to be mad but the owners might have gotten it right this time. And with two weeks to go, Rafa and Parry need to work fast to bring in a winger to complete the squad.

It sounds like Benitez has lost the support of Hicks and Gillette
Mancini in?
I hope so
August 19th, 2008 @ 10:42barry is a much better player than alonso, much more inventive.
glad liverpool are not getting him, shows the rest of the prem that they are not as big as they think, they have made a public mess of this affair and should be fined by the fa, for unsettling a player that they could never afford all along.
villa will replace liverpool as a top 4 team this year.
August 19th, 2008 @ 10:43Its not easy being green
August 19th, 2008 @ 10:44It does not matter is the owner, yourself or anyone else for that matter think Barry is not worth £18m (and just for the record I am a Liverpool supporter and don’t want Barry). Nevertheless, the manager should be given a budget and be allowed to spend it how he wants if he fails he gets the sack.
So if money is not the issues then Barry should be brought, the owners cannot turn around at the end of the season and sack Rafa for not winning the title if they are responsible for the signing (or non-signings) not the manager.
Its simple the owner provide a budget the manager buys who he wants and if he then fails to deliver no one can complain when he is sacked, the only thing is the budget given needs to be reflected in the expectations, they can’t give him £10 and expect him to compete with Man U & Chelsea.

August 19th, 2008 @ 10:49And Villa in the top four, YOUR HAVIN A LAUGH!!!!!!
August 19th, 2008 @ 10:50For 18million there is better value out there and at a younger age. The spanish coach must like Alonso to put him in the WINNING squad. I don’t think any team will replace the top four this season. However, I think Chelski will buy the title and their money is spoiling the game. Without Roman’s money they would be in the red.
August 19th, 2008 @ 10:52andrew, you speak wise words
August 19th, 2008 @ 10:53pool top brass have to get behind rafa or get shot of him and buy in a managerial puppet
wise words over then!
August 19th, 2008 @ 10:54villa have a big shot this year, mark my words!!
Alonso is world class and just had a bad season last term. There is no better passer of the football around. The only advantage Barry has over him is that he is more direct and more aggressive in the tackle – other than that, he falls short in every other department. Liverpool need pacy and skillful wingers, not someone like Barry who wont offer anything different.
August 19th, 2008 @ 10:54Villa replacing Liverpool in the top four?? Keep dreaming!!
I’m a Villa fan and am sick and tired of this saga, as I’m sure many Liverpool fans are. I really couldn’t care a less now whether he stays or goes.
One thing it has shown though is that there is a serious rift at Liverpool and I think Barry would be stark raving mad to go there now.
August 19th, 2008 @ 10:56chelski will take some stopping this year, they have hit the start of the season running and not even manure look as if they can compete!
August 19th, 2008 @ 10:58arsenal look as if they will be very good once fully fit and on form.
pool look a bit shakey if you ask me. euro qualifier and 1st game were not very convincing. who do pool have on sat?
Villa are a good side and I’d say will finish 5th, O’Neil is building a really good side and if anyone is going to challenge the top 4 it will be them, just think it will be a few years yet and if anyone drops out this year it look like Arsenal to me
August 19th, 2008 @ 10:59haller… please be realistic
August 19th, 2008 @ 11:00it’s not going to happen
Middlesbrough at home on Saturday, hopefully three more points although they played well on the weekend, so won’t be as easy as first thought
August 19th, 2008 @ 11:01fabregas is the best passer in the premiership btw.
alonso gets caught on the ball too often, slow feet
August 19th, 2008 @ 11:02Why has the board been so slow to make what you call the right decision? Has Barry gotten slower in the last 4 months? I think this is more politics from Parry’s point of view and is not good for the team once again this season. Wish Parry would get things right or get out now! If Barry wasn’t worth 18 million 4 months ago then he still isn’t. Why cause everybody heart aches over this transfer? Only Barry and the teams suffer because of this stupid thinking by Parry. Certainly the yanks have no idea of Barry’s value they will only know what Rafa and Parry tell them. We now see who they believe! Parry’s transfer record of negotiating has to be one of the worst in the league…
August 19th, 2008 @ 11:04the game after that ia against villa, will be a good one i think.
gradge match now i suppose. and very fast forward line v’s a very slow back line
score predictions?
3-1 villa carew 1st goal looks worth a £
August 19th, 2008 @ 11:06Ha Ha Ha, when was the last time three went past Reina? Except for maybe the Manc’s when Mach was sent off.
More likely 1 nil to Liverpool and of course Torres scores!
August 19th, 2008 @ 11:14If villa keep Barry we will finish top 4 and Rafa knows this. Any fans who dont rate barry know next to nothing about football, just ask Rafa, MON, Capello, Wenger even the idiot hansen now seems to see his value, Alonso is not even close, good though he is. One thing is for sure if L Pool dont sign him he will score against you in our next match
and if Villa win you all look fools, if we loose then its expected. UTV
August 19th, 2008 @ 11:23Pool are definately in decline. Two average full backs brought only illustrate this. Got no idea who they are going to buy or not, just argue amongst themselves. Take away Torres and Gerard very average team. Will not be in the champions league within the next two seasons and Everton, Villa and Spurs will be above them. Might just shut the egotists up then!
August 19th, 2008 @ 11:28What do the Liverpool fans think about the Mancini link?
Do they welcome it?
August 19th, 2008 @ 11:30nothing wrong with rafa, just needs support
August 19th, 2008 @ 11:33The point is that the board knew for a very long time that Barry was Only Going to go for a Fee in the region of 18mil,
So if they had no intention of paying this sum then they should’ve told Rafa and allowed him more time to look for a suitable replacement.
PARRY is a JOKE when it comes to negoiating deals for us to often he is unwilling to budge even the slight bit, need i remind people of the Daniel Avles only need an extra million to sign him for 8mil, or the Ronaldo when he begged us to sign him only for Parry to refuse to pay him 10,000 a week,
AS FOR THE YANKs, THEY SAY THEY BACK RAFA 100% AND TRUST HIM YET THEY FAIL TO SHOW THERE SUPPORT IN THE TRANSFER MARKET,
lets face it they are never going to get it right in the eyes of most liverpool fans even if they are right, time to jump ship i think and sod of back to the states.
August 19th, 2008 @ 11:36we need gareth barry at liverpool fc he can play on the left wing & central midfield how much did we pay for robbie keane 20 mil so what is the difference.i think it is the americans owners who just dont want spend some money we have babbel who can play on the right wing & we can keep hold of alonso if pennant, voronin & finnan goes come on board back ya manager or is it going to ne another season lioke last season more argueing in the public eye.we are a laugthing stock
August 19th, 2008 @ 11:38Tinker and Moocher do you two live in your own little Aston Villa fantasy land?
Firstly as stated before I think Villa are building a good team but if you think they will finish above Liverpool and in the top 4 this season, you are simply dreaming.
Secondly, Barry is really good but Liverpool don’t need more mid fielders we need wingers.
Thirdly and the funnies one of all, Liverpool in decline…………………………………………………………………………. sorry finding hard to type as I am laughing so much. Just take a look at the kids coming through average age of our team (it’s actually only just a bit older the Arsenal who everyone raves about as a great young team). We have won 2 FA youth cups and the reserves title in the last three years (I believe we beat Villa!) That’s not even mentioning we have the best striker in the world in Torres, and how old is he again?
Wake up and smell the coffee guys!
August 19th, 2008 @ 11:54What is it with some Liverpool fans?
Alonso is a decent player, at best.. What he isn’t is a player that will help Liverpool win the title again. It’s not his fault, he is a player much better suited to a continental style of football and that’s why Arsenal maybe a better home for him.
Barry may not be blessed with pace but he has a great left foot, scores goals, runs his heart out and is English! So come on, less with blind faith.. onwards and upwards!!
Let’s say a fond farewell to Xabi and try and win the title!!
PARRY MUST GO!!
August 19th, 2008 @ 11:56I think Liverpool may even finish in the top half this season, a commendable feat given the turmoil at the club.
August 19th, 2008 @ 11:57Gerrard in shock transfer to Aston Villa-
Desperate Gerrard keen to link up with his England roommate on a more regular basis has submitted a written transfer request and has sparked the interest of Martin O’Neil.
Previous Villa chairman Deadly Doug Ellis was qouted as saying
‘I’m not sure Gerrard is worth the £25 million asking price – i think we should offer £24.8 Million and hold out for Liverpool to crack.
Randy Lerner was last seen with his cheque book signing a 30 million cheque before O’neil could say…”There a little scouser we’ve been scouting and….”
August 19th, 2008 @ 12:40Villain…quality comments…
Liverpool fans, open your eyes do you really rate all the players that Rafa brings in…20 million for Robbie K, good but not that good…how much will united pay for Berb????
Villa have held out well for the 18 mil for their best player and team captain…what would you do if someone came in for Gerrard and the price was not right????? Parry may even be tempted. As for Alonso not as good as you all make out…
UTV
August 19th, 2008 @ 12:57I think everybody is fed up now! It’s gone on so long that I’m not convinced Liverpool will ever buy him. Would he really want to go to a club where the chairman and many fans don’t want him? He’d be stupid to go. There are two people who could end it now – Barry could just say he’s staying (which he would be wise to do given the state of the two clubs) or O’Neill could just say “He’s not for sale at any price”. If not it will drag on and on until 1st September.
Villa are on a massive up slope and Liverpool look a little shakey at the moment. Liverpool have a great team and squad, but the turmoil behind the scenes is bad for a club. We had it with Ellis for years and over time it affects the fans, the team, everybody. Fans stop going to games (out of protest – I alone know 10-15 people who refused to go until Ellis left), players stop wanting to join and start wanting to leave, and nobody is happy. For years under Ellis everybody wanted him out, he meddled in team affairs, wouldn’t sanction transfers, etc. and it was like a plague at the club. Now everything is brilliant and the team is coming on leaps and bounds. Attendances are up, we have a brilliant manager, our young squad is rapidly improving, we too have a great youth set up and we have a fantastic chairman – all of which is creating a real buzz around the club. Maybe this year will be too soon, but I guarantee that we will be in the champion’s league within the next 3 seasons, quite possibly at the expense of Liverpool if they don’t sort their internal battles out.
August 19th, 2008 @ 13:02Hmmm… Re. Andrew’s comments on Liverpool in decline…
“kids coming through,” “average age of our team,” “FA youth cups and the reserves title,” “best striker in the world…”
All very impressive, but should you fail to qualify for the Champions League, then how are your bickering owners going to pay for it all? Do you think Torres will stick around when Liverpool can’t pay his wages because they’re too busy trying to find the cash to pay off the rest of his loaned transfer fee? Or the huge loan they took out to finance the purchase of the club? How much debt are Liverpool in again?
Make no mistake, in terms of the club’s medium to long term future, Liverpool are in a very precarious position. All it would take is a 5th place finish to kick off the decline. “Wake up and smell the coffee” indeed!
August 19th, 2008 @ 13:06I think if there was a straight swap Barry(18m) for Alonso(18m), then it would be a great transfer.
August 19th, 2008 @ 13:38I think Barry is better suited to the Prem League, his short range passing, composure and defending are better than Alonso’s. If you want to pick a long distance pass then give the ball to Stevie G.
To buy Barry and keep Alonso is a bad idea, its not like Liverpool can afford to have either of those players sitting on the bench when 18m would buy a quality left footed winger, who you could have playing most of the time.
I am a Liverpool supported but for the last 18 year we have been without a great manager and board for so long.
I dont think rafa is good enough for the premiership and his tactics are useless. He constantly buys these average players only to sell for less a couple years later then bring in the same type the following.
As one person pointed out, take Gerrard and Torres out the squad and liverpool will be less than average.
Not to mention Liverpool not qualifying for the Champs league will mean an exodus of players and bank calling for repayments made. Liverpool are on a Knife edge at the moment. Look at the books and all the boardroom arguments. A mess
August 19th, 2008 @ 14:34“Roberto Mancini has declined to comment that he has been offered the position of manager of Liverpool FC”.
Liverpool fans – if Rafa goes would you want Mancini??
August 19th, 2008 @ 16:13Ok lets get a few things straight, Liverpool will qualify for the Champions League next week no worries at all, not even a question we will not lose at Anfield.
Yeah the financial position of the club is shocking, the owners and board are pathetic, but sooner or latter we will be rid of Hicks, Gillett and Parry and there will always be plenty of willing buyers for LFC.
And for the third time Liverpool not finishing in the top 4 you’re havin a laugh, you would almost swear it was a bunch of Spurs supporters on here raving on about breaking into the top 4 like they have been the last couple of years and look what happened there!
August 19th, 2008 @ 16:45Oh yeah and true Liverpool fans don’t want anything but backing for Rafa from some decent owners and a decent board.
IN RAFA WE TRUST
August 19th, 2008 @ 16:47YNWA
GO NOW RAFA
For the sake of Liverpool Football Club.
I’d love Mancini to take us to the title.
August 19th, 2008 @ 16:53There’s no point arguing the toss with ANDREW(he’s so clearly a scouse teenager). LFC are in trouble financially FACT. Barry is more than good enough and we’re keeping him at Villa Park, so get over it. It is all very well saying he’s crap when all attempts to sign him for LFC have failed(Just think how ace you’d have called him if he was yours). Top four is not pipe dream, but a show of ambition and isn’t that all fans want for their clubs. Enough said….
August 19th, 2008 @ 18:35My comments aren’t made to piss you scousers off, but to ask for a reality check for the year ahead. Good Luck to you if things don’t go pearshaped, but ridiculing others is not on…
August 19th, 2008 @ 18:38I think Barry will still sign for LFC if they beat Standard Liege. If he does then they may crack the big 3, and we (AVFC) will find it very hard to replace him.
Hopefully either they wont win next week or Rafa gets shafted by the owners. He is worth £18m it just seems that the owners read the websites and think that the fans no more than Rafa.
If he does go then cannot complain he has showed what type of player he is in his performances in the UEFA and against MCFC. If I was a Liverpool fan (thankfully this will never be) then I would be hoping that Barry comes to Anfield and shows what an excellent player he is.
August 19th, 2008 @ 19:21Just for the record, I am an Aussie who has supported Liverpool for around 20 odd years so defiantly not a teenager.
I never said Barry was crap, I rate Barry but just don’t think we need more central mid fielders and not for £18m.
And I never ridiculed anyone, I just gave my opinion as everyone else is, not saying its always right that why its only my opinion!
August 20th, 2008 @ 08:58Mancini? he moved to Inter Milan.
August 20th, 2008 @ 13:01@Liverpool Fan – the manager…
August 20th, 2008 @ 15:39Word on the street is that there is going to be a big big Rafa story in the News of the World this Sunday.
Expect Fireworks!
August 21st, 2008 @ 10:14Andrew – sorry to see that morons descended on to this thread. Closing it, hopefully I’ll see you around on the rest of the site.
