Liverpool are close to handing striker Daniel Sturridge a new five year contract. The England striker will be offered a salary in excess of £100,000 per week.

The Reds manager Brendan Rodgers revealed last season that Sturridge’s steady progress at Liverpool would be rewarded with a new contract, and Liverpool Echo reports that talks are now going on at an advanced level with the striker’s representatives over a new deal.

Sturridge scored 21 goals (36 goals in 52 games overall)  last season and along with Luis Suarez helped Liverpool mount a serious challenge for the Premier League title.

Liverpool have had a stuttering start to their new campaign. The Reds are lying 14th in the Premier League table and facing an uphill task to qualify for the Champions League knockout phase after suffering a 1-0 defeat against Basle last night.

Sturridge has been heavily missed by Liverpool in recent weeks, as the England striker is yet to return to full fitness having missed the last six games with a thigh injury.

He could make the bench this week against West Brom in the Premier League but will miss out international games after Roy Hodgson has agreed not to include him in England’s Euro 2016 qualifiers against San Marino and Estonia.
