Liverpool mugged by Styles as Chelsea rescue a point
When Rob Styles gave that penalty - when Malouda ran into Agger with the ball long gone right in front of the referee - it was grounds enough for a good old-fashioned lynching.
As the referee Styles is certain to get all the blame for the decision, but he’s not the only one at fault. Well, you can try putting it on Malouda and call Chelsea cheaters but the latter is not true as a rule and at the end of the day it’s Styles who had to give the decision and he gave the wrong one.
Interestingly enough, he gave the right decision when he booked Lampard for a late kick at Alonso, but he got it blindingly wrong by booking Essien for his first challenge, even though Arbeola played for the foul. Maybe Styles needs to get his eyesight checked because several of those decisions that are in front of him but some distance away are given wrong.
Oh, and there was the game as well.
Liverpool played well overall, especially in the first half and defended really well, went forward with confidence and looked a different side than usual - something that they should be doing a lot more often. Chelsea on the other hand looked ruffled at times and despite Ben Haim’s calm presence and Mikel doing well in midfield, they lacked the confidence of Carvalho and Essien’s drive in midfield.
The Torres goal - poor positioning by Essien and if you look at the replays, he was caught out too far in front and Torres ran into the space left open and Gerrard slotted in a beautiful pass. The second mistake, if you can call it a mistake, was made by Ben Haim as he stopped and thought that he had handled Torres’s run but it wasn’t to be and Torres started again, got the extra yard of space and Cech had no chance.
Liverpool deserved that goal and throughout the game while Chelsea weren’t exactly chasing they were easily second-best.
For all of Liverpool’s positivity and grit shown in the game, I think they should have gotten a second - you can’t win by a single-goal margin and they have to channel their passion into more penetration.
The whole protesting thing, especially en masse, is getting tiresome. On one hand we have referees getting crucial decisions wrong and on the other we have players acting like spoilt brats. Who’s to be held responsible for this?
The people making the rules (that would be FIFA and the Premier League). The ref’s just following the rules - he knows, the players know and everyone watching around the world knows that the refs don’t get enough support nor do they have enough time to get all decisions right.
The refs have no help whatsoever, and while the game suffers and the refs get mobbed, threatened and abused, the people responsible for the game are not doing enough.
Anyway, this result means that the top four looks something like this:
1. Manchester City (9)
2. Chelsea (7)
3. Wigan Athletic (6)
4. Everton (6)
Liverpool are tied with Arsenal and Blackburn on points (the 3 teams occupy 7th to 9th positions and are separated by goal difference) while Manchester United are 5th from bottom.
And it’s just the first week of the Premiership 07/08 season.

Wahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!!
Hey Ahmad when ur united cant do crap all,so much for title defence!,please dont diss Chelsea. Caragher and ya not agger ran into malouda when he didnt even had the ball….
nooo xerxesk it was finnan and not carragher
Styles is a Chelsea fan, look at his previous record when refereeing their games
same ref that give a stupid penalty in favour of gerrard a year ago no question h should be sacked
.
i was quite happy with our play. B4 the macth started my m8 asked me what id prefer torres goal against possibly the best keeper in the world or a liverpool victory from a kuyt or crouch goal
I said Torres goal i guess i got what i asked for but i feel a bit empty because of the stupid Referee and im sck of being the better team but not picking up the points
I imagine if the same thing happened too Chelsea thier fans would be in an uproar
A fair assessment of the Match Ahmed. Before the kick off this game had 1-1 written all over it. Liverpool should have capitalised on their dominance of the first half with another goal. One’s usually not enough with Chelsea and you leave yourself vulrerable to misadventure like penalties with only one up your sleeve. Again it seems Livepool don’t have enough goals in them when the questions are really asked.
Also I feel that they still haven’t got enough genuine speed and guile on the flanks whereas Chelsea do with Malouda and SWP and they also have a genuine 20 goal striker in Drogba. From what I saw on Sunday I can’t see Kuyt scoring 20 and though the Torres goal was crisp and classy the only first year import I can remember knocking in over twenty in his first year is Van Nistleooy.
Although their fans will be encouraged by what they see the truth is that Liverpool will have to routinely score more goals or they will again (for the 20th time in a row) be also rans especially if they can’t keep Gerrard fit. Oh and what was he on about late in the match when he scuffed a shot just outside of the box and then turned around the the ref to protest that ‘He clipped my foot’ (referring to Malouda)? He’s turned into a real nancy especially late in the game and around the goal sniffing about for a free kick. He did it last week too running into a defender and claiming he was fouled and he got a free kick for that one which got Liverpool out of jail. He’ll be diving soon no doubt.
1-1 was about the right result for this one.
What goes around comes around. Last week Liverpool won with a free kick that never was and this week they get the points taken back off them.
If Ahmed has no right to express an opinion unless he knows his side are better then Ahmed’s going to have to close this site down until Rooney and Ronaldo come back.
Agreed “9th June”, Liverpool deserved to drop 2 points against Villa.
One question though, how can Liverpool play such a boring style of game at home:)
Benetez kept cribbng the past 2 seasons that he didnt have proper squad depth to win the league. (despite spending some 100 million+ Odd?) Now he has the biggest squad and great depth but yet cant dig up anything.
You guys are idiots the reason we havent won the league is because we dont have back up. We beat teams like Juventes, Ac milan, Barcelona and Chelsea so why cant we beat Fulham and middlesbrough away from home well its simple
Compare our bench to Chelsea and Man u. we have a good starting 11 but Benitez was on the lookout for backup so he can rest his big guns in less important matches (more commonly known as rotation).
Now we have brought in good players Lucas Leiva looks promising Babel has an amazing shot and pace. we all know abot Benyoun his passing and movement and most importantly Torres who isnt a backup plan and also maybe even Heinze
(Liverpool_Fan)
I see where you’re coming from but the fact is that a team who plays together every week develop an understanding with each other and if a team goes out with a new formation/personnel every game it takes time to adapt. Look what’s happening with United.
The trouble is with Liverpool, they are happy to take the decisions that are given to them without debate ie: Last weeks free kick against villa, champions league goal against chelsea that didnt cross the line etc. Its about time they realized that it levels its self out eventually. Stop wimpering on, play the game and to the whistle and than and only then you may have a chance of being in with a chance at the end of the season. I very much doubt it thoe due to the fact, you have baught some good players but you are not yet united as a team that have the understanding of each other. As far as having no back up players in past years, how many players have you bought over the last couple of years. Its a joke and the real joke of them all is Benitze!!!!!!!!
that ref got sacked.
Yeh i agree that team mates need to gel but id just like to see how we do this season before i start making crazy predictions about us wining a treble (just an Example dont eat me for saying it).
And yes we have bought loads of players but Benitez is trying as i said to give us great back up so far lets admit until now we havent had great funds.
By the way Heinze comments below.
“I am a professional and I am concentrating every day on my career with Manchester United, but now my head is thinking about Monday’s meeting and I want a definitive solution,”
“My lawyers are optimistic about this case.
“My idea has not changed and my objective is to go to Liverpool.
“I will always be grateful to United, but now I hope they allow me to get my wish.”
Thank god hope he comes Riise is a great footballer but not a good Defender hope we get him solve our little weakness
Ben Haim was not solid in the first half at all. Torres made him look slow as hell.
Very unfortunate! As far as I can see there are only 2 possible reasons why Stiles gave a phantom penalty that everyone else in the ground knew to be innocuous:
1) He was intimidated by the Chelsea players. Given, that on this occasion the Chelsea players were as surprised as everyone else and none of them even requested a penalty, this possibility does not seem very likely.
2) Stiles is a Chelsea fan or hates Liverpool. He was looking to give Chelsea something and get them back in the game. If this hypothesis is true, his only mistake was to give a decision that was so blatantly biased. He was really looking for a 50-50 opportunity that could have looked like a genuine mistake. By the way, Stiles is southern and from Hampshire.
What Stiles did was criminal. I think he should be sacked for good. It’s quite possible that this year’s Premiership will be decided on goal difference–and how important will those lost 2 points look then?
A for that guy who said Liverpool should have scored more, he’s talking out of his a** hole. Games between the big teams in the PL are rarely decided by more than a single goal. The point on this occasion is that though things were pretty even, Liverpool had the goal in hand and didn’t look like they were going to allow Chelsea to score: then Stiles decided to do the blues a good turn. If not for that decision, Liverpool would have won a tight and closely contested game 1-0.
Agreed Jon (with your second comment) but i dont see know reason to be down incase anyone has looked past the Ref mistakes Torres Scored!!!!! Through the best defense in the world then to the best keeper in the world.
If we lose the league by a point then people will say we shouldn’t have had a free kick agaisnt Villa but now its kinda pay back and if Man United fans are holdin their heads up after 2 points out of 9 then why are we complaining!!!
be happy
How ridiculous can this get? Rob Styles has apologised to Liverpool that his penalty decision in the Liverpool vs Chelsea match Sunday, was a mistake. I remember that Jose Mourinho had said in public that referees should also be interviewed and made to explain their very crucial match-defining decisions. Nobody read too much into that idea. Last season, blunder after blunder, no one ever apologised to Chelsea for the referee errors on penalties and red cards. When it’s Liverpool, Styles does not even wait for 24 hours to call Rafa to say sorry. Pathetic.
Did anyone apologise for not awarding the Tottenham goal in 04-05 against Man Utd, when the goalie cunningly collected the ball two feet beyond the goal line? Did anyone in La Liga apologise for the goal that Messi scored with his hand? Did anyone apologise for not awarding penalties at Old Trafford? I like the idea of referees apologising for their errors. not even to apologise, but just to admit they were wrong. But it should not be only for Liverpool. If it becomes a practice, then that’ll be fine.
And, to suggest that the match would have ended at 1-0 to Liverpool, if the penalty was not awarded, is plain naive and stupid. The penalty equaliser was not in the second half stoppage time. It was scored with about 30 minutes to go if I’m right. If this penalty was not given, anything could have happened. Five minutes later, if Drogba had managed to find the net, probably we could have nicked one more and could have finished 2-1. The bottomline is, I mean, anything could have happened.
To say Chelsea intimidated the referee into giving the penalty is laughable. I didn’t see a single player appeal for the penalty… all I saw was Liverpool players surrounding him.
Bektya, Dont let these arm chair sappoters wind you up, all liverpool fans seem to think the game of football has a different rule book for them like when the phantom champions league goal against chelsea. Also like when they finished fith in the league and had the rules changed so they could play champions league the following year. When they lose you should expect twats like that to have a excuse why they were beaten. That was never a penalty, That was never a free kick, he should of been sent off, the ref was crap and a chelsea sapporter, the grass was to long. You got to remember, they are sat at home all week with all that time on there hands saving up there dole money ready for next years prem plus ticket. Muppets!!!
Bektya and Penalty Pete are idiots with the IQ of orang utangs (if that’s not an insult to orang utangs!). Chelsea had NO chance of scoring without the penalty decision. It’s not like they gave up trying after Lumpard stuck it in: didn’t have it in them! By the way, why isn’t Mourinho shooting his mouth off now? After the game he praised the ref. and said he did “OK”. Now the referees themselves (and Styles) have admitted to a terrible decision and Styles has ben suspended. So how can big mouth Mourinho still think the Ref. did “OK”? If the decision had been against Chelsea and Liverpool had won 2-0, we’d never have heard the last of it!
Hope we really wipe your a**es in the s**t this year!
Maybe Mourinho should apologize to Rafa and Liverpool for saying Styles did “OK” when it’s since been proven that he gave a penalty that didn’t exist?
jon aristides? Is that the same jon aristides that normally comments on under nines girls youth football? It mast be because you sound like the kind of twat that gets his kicks out of watching a bunch of girls trying to play football. That must also mean you are a Liverscum fag, I mean fan! Maybe when Liverscum actually come close to challanging for the premo you may have a reason to compare yourself to chelsea. After all, the liverscum that most love has all got there free bus passes now. By the way one last thing, Let me know when your going out next because I have heard your Mrs wants to meet a real man and not a snotty nosed prick like yourself. You know the type, Faggot…..
if that penalty wasnt given we would go on to win 5:0
problem solved.
The Styles mistake was too strange not to deserve an apoligy
at least take points off chelsea!!!
Honestly FOOLS as horrendous as that mistake was it’s only fair. You fools forget rather quickly,(its to be expected of fools anyway), this is revenge for that goal in the champions league. It really does even out over the course of football.AINT THAT A BITCH!!!LOL!
Everything evens out. The 2005 Cl “goal” that never was and the phantom foul at Aston Villa the week before. Every team gets breaks and gets junk calls sometimes, but life has a way of evening it out.
