Steve McManaman Tells Rodgers to Sign Six Players to Meet CL Demands
Liverpool legend Steve McManaman believes the Reds need a make at least five or six signings during the summer transfer window to meet the demands of Champions League football.
The Merseyside club finished second in the table, just two points behind Manchester City last season. Despite failing to win the Premier League title, Brendan Rodger’ side have sealed a place in the group stages of the Europe’s best club competition.
The former Liverpool midfielder won the Champions League twice with Real Madrid and McManaman believes the former Swansea boss needs to improve both the team and the squad.
“I think Liverpool need to bulk up in all areas. If they can bring five or six players in who will improve their team and improve their squad, if you’re a Liverpool fan, that’s what you want,” McManaman told the Liverpool ECHO.
“Liverpool will need a significant number of players if they are to compete in the league and the Champions League.”
“I like the spine of the team to improve. If they can improve on those areas, I think they will be great. Steven Gerrard’s not going to play forever.”
“Jordan Henderson and Joe Allen have done well this year, but you can always improve, can’t you? If you can bring in another centre forward, you will make the fans very happy,” he concluded.
Liverpool have already signed Rickie Lambert from Southampton earlier this week. The Reds are linked with the striker’s former teammate and England midfielder Adam Lallana.
Meanwhile, Sevilla president has confirmed the Anfield club’s interest in signing Alberto Moreno, while Barcelona star Alexis Sanchez is on Liverpool’s radar, who is also a summer target for Manchester United and Paris Saint-Germain.
If the reports are to be believed, Moreno and Lallana are set to join Lambert at Anfield as Rodgers looks to bring in reinforcements to strengthen Liverpool’s squad for the next season.
