God Loves You Pepe…and So Do The Kop!
Historical goalkeeping, a sea of red sang songs of awe and joy, and Pepe Reina will never really have to walk alone again. Can things get any better for Liverpool? Oh, this reporter senses a tantalizing Champions League final series. As for you Pepe, I hold you in awe, sir.
Houllier Benitez sat Zen-like on the floor, legs crossed throughout as Zenden smashed one to the far left of Petr Cech. Robben rumbled onto a long run up, and Reina produced a stunning save to his left. What was significant about the save from a goalkeeping perspective was Reina’s ability to cut the angle of the ball significantly, coming wide off his line and dedicating himself perfectly to the situation.
Gerrard was clinical, Cech trying to faze his attempt with some Grobelaar-like “wobbly knees”. Now the third attempt by Chelsea, to me at least, is a defining moment in Pepe Reina’s career. When many, even this old goalkeeping sod, thought less of him, he produced something brilliant, something we goalkeepers call “digging deep”. Gerrard cried out “we have the best goalkeeper in the world” and rightly so.
Digging deep, Pepe Reina produced a phenomenal parry-like save, but the beauty of the save was his timing and the way he held onto the ball…this is in my opinion Jedi-like goalkeeping (yeah it bundled out of his hands a little, but who is watching). To me as a goalkeeper and a Liverpool fan, it was as if in unison, a swarm of Liverpool fans’ energy was clustered into one jedi-like wave, and the focal point of that power lay in Pepe Reina…he did many goalkeepers around the globe proud with this fine display.
The rest, I guess is history. I feel sad for Petr Cech, I feel he epitomises everything that is great in goalkeeping, resilience, fortitude, courage and leadership. I feel sorry for Mourinho (I know you don’t agree with me Ahmed), all in all he is a brilliant manager, what will happen now? Time tells all.
“Can we replay this fantastic penalty shoot-out John?”

Hate to be a stickler and you must of chuckled at it yourself when you saw it but that wasnt Houllier but wiseman Benitez.
Yet another fantastic night to remember at Anfield! Only it was Benitez who was sitting zen-like on the floor! not Houllier my friend…
Unfortunately looks like G-d doesn’t love Pepe all that much…his house was ransacked last night.
