Bayern Munich defender Jerome Boateng has emerged as a potential transfer target for Premier League club Liverpool.

According to TuttoMercatoweb, Reds boss Brendan Rodgers is keen to add Champions League experience to his squad with his side a certainty to compete in next season’s tournament.

Rodgers has already begun planning for next season’s European campaign with reports surfacing of interest in unsettled Chelsea full-back Ashley Cole, and a rumoured bid for Inter Milan midfielder Mateo Kovacic.

However, it will take a huge offer to prise Germany international Boateng away from the Allianz Arena, with the 25 year-old having agreed to a contract extension in December until 2018. A stalwart in Pep Guardiola’s Bayern side, Boateng has played a pivotal role in the German giants’s record-breaking Bundesliga title victory this season and any move looks highly unfeasible.

All the same, centre-half is indisputably a position Liverpool must strengthen in if their stay in the Champions League is to be an extended one. While the SAS partnership of Luis Suarez and Daniel Sturridge has propelled the Anfield outfit into the title race, the Reds’ defensively porous traits have been often masked by their propensity to out-score their opponents.

  1. Our centre halves are as good as anyones, what we lack is a mobile defensive midfielder to offer a little protection to the back four. Stevie is’nt quick enough despite his massive experience, Allen is a waste of time defensivly, and Lucas aint fit. Henderson reads the game well, is quick and mobile, I would play him in front of our back four (he might not like it but he isnt paid to!) and let Gerrard do what he is good at – bossing the midfield, with Liverpools attacking options he does not have to make the forward runs of yester-year just spread the ball about like the maestro he is.

  2. Its very good move to bring in boateng, let’s hope it ‘ll work out this time around.

  3. Bayern München never sell their players unless they want to leave.
No player ever wants to leave Bayern.
Ballack was the last player that wanted to leave and Bayern let his contract run out. They never sold him.
You English media should have learned this by now!

  4. Seriously doubt we’d be able to prise Boateng away from Bayern & if we did it would be for a rediculous amount of money. You have to ask yourself if that’s worth it in terms of what else we need for the squad & the answer must be no! We need another defender because Kolo will be leaving but we have Skrtel, Agger & Sakho already & i think we should forego buying another defender & put Ilori & Wisdom into the first team squad. The tranafer funds should be used primarily to buy a LB (Moreno/Shaw), a CM (Rakitic/Isco/Koke) & a LW. I’d like to see a few youngsters brought in too (Jamaal Lecelles, Dele Alli, Martin Montoya, Will Hughes, Ryan Gauld, Seung Woo Lee, Sebastien Tello/Alvaro Morata to reinforce the first team &/or replace those who get promoted from the U21′s. With Borini, Alberto, Texaria, Suso, Ibe, Coady, Robinson, Ilori, Wisdom & McLaughin added/recalled to the first team squad we’d have & youthful, gifted & vibrant team big enough to launch an assult on the league with! Hope we get our business done quickly regardless of who comes in.
