Liverpool Agony - The Ineffective £71 Million

Share

A strong finish last season under the legend Kenny Dalglish and the injection of money by the owners to add talent in Liverpool’s squad reignited hope amongst the supporters that the club is back to winning ways. Nevertheless four draws at Anfield in six games and Liverpool are struggling to beat the promoted sides when the task of getting into top 4 is harder than ever.

The agony of their inability to score goals and finish teams off is infuriating and the fresh faces on whom the club spent millions cannot avoid the share of blame. What’s more maddening is the start made by new arrivals of Liverpool’s rivals. Ashley Young has been an instant hit at United even though it was Downing who finished Villa’s player of the season and not him. Gervinho is pulling the strings at Arsenal having lost two world class players in Nasri and Fabregas. Liverpool missed out on Mata who week in week out shows his class for Chelsea and even Tottenham’s Scott Parker is now a core part of his side. That has highlighted the setbacks of Carroll, Henderson and Downing who have not lived up to expectations at all.

Charlie Adam has been performing well on and off and not much noise is heard about him as the club did not spend heavily for his services. The Spanish left back Enrique is by far Liverpool’s best signing of the summer, was bought for a bargain. The main concern is in fact the three English players for whom the club spent a massive 71 million pounds. The worst way to define their performances is:

The 36 million spent on crosses is not linking with the 35 million spent on the header

LFC Liverpool Agony – The Ineffective £71 Million Talent

Liverpool signings were all based on stats and performances. These three performed well for their previous clubs but the challenge at Liverpool is not that simple. Fans do not want them to end up like Robbie Keane who was good at Tottenham but could not fit in Liverpool. For now things seem as if that’s exactly the case.

Last year Downing scored ten goals and provided pin point crosses for Aston Villa but for Liverpool he is yet to open his account having started every league game. Some poor finishing from LFC players means Downing have no assist yet, lately as Carroll missed a sitter but overall his crossing has been all over the place. Against Swansea, Downing made 8 crosses with only 2 of them being successful that by no means indicate value for money. Strange that he maintains his starting place when Bellamy has been impressive and deserves to start.

The case of Jordan Henderson is even worst. If his own words were not enough than his performances as a winger say it out load that he is not comfortable on the flanks. The talented boy has pace, but no dribbling skills or brilliant crossing ability to be termed or played as a winger. His natural position is center midfield that in Liverpool is too strong for him to start ahead of Gerrard, Adam and Lucas. However since Liverpool have spent a lot on him so time and time again Kenny opts to start Henderson instead of much effective Dirk Kuyt on the right. That in turn hinders their performance.

Andy Carroll is normally haunted by that price tag of 35 million. Many believe it’s not his fault that he cost that much but the fact is Liverpool has paid that amount and now he has to deliver. At the end of the day, if you buy a player and he performs well, no one will remember the cost. The big fellow is trying his best to get into scoring positions but not getting much help from the crosses. The wing service not being up to the mark is one thing but Carroll has only been able to link up well with Suarez against West Brom else he has not been mobile enough to keep up with the constant drive of the Uruguayan.

Liverpool could not buy world class talent as they were not in the Champions League. Still having spent 100 million on new arrivals; there is no excuse or sympathy if they finish out of top 4 yet again. Owner John W Henry has reiterated many times that Liverpool target champions league football so anything below top 4 is an immense failure. Kenny Dalglish claims:

“The problems that are there are problems that we can solve ourselves”

Liverpool surely need to solve them soon to turn the situation around with instant improvement from the new players as the fixtures only get harder.

  1. Apart from the 71 milliion pounds signing, others are also not performing especially Lucas., Lucas doesnt deserve to be in the first team just a squad player at best. He cant tackle well, dribble the ball, cross the ball of head the ball well and loses the ball during body contact. There rest, you can add.

    • Not sure that you’re watching the same Liverpool that everyone else is.

Lucas has the best passing stats in the team (not saying much), is a huge miss when not in DM and has been responsible for so much of the good at Liverpool in recent seasons.

He’s a great partner for any of the CMF at Liverpool and is evolving into one of the best at Liverpool right now. Young, Brazilian and growing in strength, sure he has had bad performances in the past but I can’t remember the last time I saw him have a bad game in terms of overall contribution. Take him out and Liverpool might look like a different side, but right now he’s one of the Red’s most consistent.

      • Unfortunately only stupid people going to say Lucas leiva is rubbish at Liverpool.

    • No creative in midfield … Just buy quality player like gervinho that we lose to arsenal … Now he was great than 20million henderson … Please buy haZard !!!

  2. They don’t have the desire to win over others and all I hear is another excuse after another. The main issue in Liverpool is no longer just about who they purchased last summer or who are they going to purchase this winter. If a team lost it’s wild-side and ambition, even a world-class player could play like a lower grade player in the team. Now, Liverpool don’t even dare to dream big or how to become big, all they care about is “how” to survive within the “Big 4″ and hardly score any goal. You know what Liverpool need the most is stop giving any excuse and blaming who shouldn’t be on the team. How about just play/score like you are enjoying every single match with Liverpool and don’t give a damn what other people think/say.

  3. crap crap crap. Henderson is an excellent player and I will guarantee you will be the first name on the team sheet for England in a few years. Carroll doesn’t look happy and is still feeling the weight of his transfer value but if he can buck up and get a bit of luck he can justify it. Berbatov did it.
Downing is the same story, has looked electric at times and has hit the bar/post more than any player i can think of this season. Again, needs a bit of luck. None of them played well Saturday, but neither did Adam, Jono or Lucas show up in an attacking sense.

    • yes the players are playin crap crap crap
Whats written in the article is fact fact fact, dont talk about he is excellent or what, talk about what he has been doing is no way excellent

  4. We didn’t have the best of games this weekend but still managed to make their keep work so hard he made the BBC team of the week and hit the woodwork AGAIN.

We are making chances, and sooner or later some team is going to be on the wrong end of a cricket score.

As for peapole who are still having a pop at Lucas, we missed him when suspended and was player of the season last season. Watch a game properly.

  6. Not a bad article but you have to look at bigger picture. Last year this time were looking at bottom three teams and the team was looking nowhere near the top 4 nor 6. KK changed the fortunes and besides last two matches we had strong finish of the campaing.

We made investments – not a small amount of money. Adam, Downing, Enrique were bought as a complete players and just Downing has yet to deliver but Adam perfomed well and Enrique has been amazing.

Henderson and Carroll are investments to the future – Henderson will sooner or later have to fill the boots of SG and Carroll just needs to find his rythm and the team needs to gel with his style of play.

LFC is a still work in progress and this year we will hopefully fight for the 4th place to the end with a lucky ending for us. And look at city it took them almost 4 years and 500 million pounds to get them where are they now…top of the league with some nice football. But that’s not the LFC way, is it?

    • mate we had 15 points in 11 games under hodgson wen he had no penny n now we hav 19 points after spendin so much so dats like v bad, i think we shud stop bringin hodgson bak agen n agen just to make ourselves feel better by sayin (it cud be worst)…

Talkin abt carroll, selling main talisman n spendin 35 million means u want instant impact, i knw hes young, but so was torres 23 wen we bought him…no one spendin so heavily for a player sayin that wed see him workin after a year or so….about hendo playn him at wrong position will not grow him, adverse affect

i knw wer work in progress, but dont think any one will be OK if LFC finish out of top 4 yet again? Or is it ok??? As i said theres no excuse…

      • Well I just don’t understand why are you so negative. You’re kicking out players after 11 games..I mean common. I’m sure no one at the club is happy with our position and everyone really wants to win.

We’re lacking speed and creativity in the midfield. KK should be more encouraged to go forward, we have great players for that and back is solid as well. 4-4-2 is nor working. I think we should try 4-3-3 with Lucas, Adam, Gerrard/Henderson in the middle.

        • m not being negative mate, niether iv slated nyone nor ive said that they are not goin to come good in future…

Ive only mentioned facts in the article about what has happened uptil now. And me sayn that after spendin heavy amount one expects instant impact then thats not being negative, thats fair enough….on the contrary sayin that an xpensive player can take some time n that sometime equals a year or so then that is being overly positive. The backing never stops but surely with time we only get desperate for good performances….

  7. liverpool will have to overcome their slump or else theyll find themselves with a lot of ground to cover in order to make it into the top 4/5 ,for nw i thnk liverpool should leave carrol out and play bellamy with suarez ,thats the best combination they have

a nice article ,but be patient farjad ,it takes time for players to gel together and become a team

  8. Lucas is mediocre. Passing stats means nothing when most of his passes are backwards and under minimal pressure. He has no imagination as a midfielder and can’t even tackle without getting a yellow.

The rest of the new players are also mediocre (Henderson, Downing). Adam is a little better but definitely not destined to become a world-class midfielder. Carroll has talent but is overrated (by LFC who paid so much money) and definitely not unstoppable. Suarez has talent but very little patience. And it won’t be long before he changes his mind if he sees no CL football with LFC…

Although no one can be certain, this LFC team has not progressed over time this season. They struggle to score (and that includes Suarez), break organized defences and have been inconsistent so far. They depend too much on Suarez and Carroll to score with headers. It will be very hard to get in top 4 this year.

    • Lucas is not supposed to create creative passes just like Mascherano wasnt responsible for this, Adam has this role…
Lucas is performing his job as a CDM really well, most successfull tackles this season and our defensive record is goin very good and we owe him alot for that.

The signings are not world class as we culd not attract CL stars being not in europe at all, so we got the ones who have good stats in the league but unfortunately that hasnt gone too well for us.

  9. Patience is the key but dont tell me poor results against Swansea and Norwich at home deserve any sort of patience.

Patience for Carrol wy, do you think that even in 5 years he will be any where near Suarez, no because he aint got that game, with presence and header he cannot be world class.

Henderson may be will take time as he has got the attributes but without a doubt the amount paid was bizzare and any non UK quality young player could have been bought

Downing i think will come good sooner rather than later
