List of Premiership players to miss matches during African Cup of Nations

SL reader and forum member XerxesK was kind enough to post the following list in the forum – see if you can add to it and / or find flaws in it.

The African Cup of Nations in Ghana from January 20 — February 10, 2008, will see the Premier League stripped of many of its stars. With training commitments, the following players could miss as many as five league matches.

The list:

Arsenal (3): Kolo Toure, Emmanuel Eboue (both Ivory Coast), Emmanuel Adebayor (Togo)
Birmingham City (3): Richard Kingson (Ghana), Mehdi Nafti, Radhi Jaidi (both Tunisia)
Blackburn (1): Aaron Mokoena (South Africa)
Bolton (3): Abdoulaye Meite (Ivory Coast), Abdoulaye Faye, El-Hadji Diouf (both Senegal)
Chelsea (4): Michael Essien (Ghana), John Obi Mikel (Nigeria), Didier Drogba, Salomon Kalou (both Ivory Coast)
Everton (2): Joseph Yobo (Nigeria), Steven Pienaar (South Africa)
Fulham (2): Papa Bouba Diop, Diomansy Kamara (both Senegal)
Liverpool (1): Momo Sissoko (Mali)
Middlesbrough (1): Ayegbeni Yakubu (Nigeria)
Newcastle United (2): Obafemi Martins (Nigeria), Geremi (Cameroon)
Portsmouth (4): Kanu, John Utaka (both Nigeria), Djimi Traore (Mali), Sulley Muntari (Ghana)
Tottenham (4): Benoit Assou-Ekotto (Cameroon), Didier Zokora (Ivory Coast), Ahmed Mido, Hossam Ghaly (both Egypt)
West Ham (1): John Pantsil (Ghana)
Wigan (2): Julius Aghahowa (Nigeria), Henri Camara (Senegal)

No such worries for Aston Villa, Derby County, Manchester City, Manchester United Reading or Sunderland.

Corrections and updates welcome.

Why did Arsenal miss out on Ribery and Malouda?
Opening Weekend: Guts, Goals and Injuries

  1. This is bad. Gunners can royally raped if they have some injuries on top of the absentees……………

  2. Yeah, we will be in trouble if there is THeo, Bendtner or RVP and Eduard out, Were in the shit.

But look at Chelsea, some of there best players are out, Lucky for them half there great [plyaers are on the bench, So no real loss.

Hope Mali, Senegal, Togo or Cameroon win, I really do!

  3. i dont think arseanl would be too much worse, i would just put sagna as cb and hoyte at rb, i would play eboue in midfield this season so there is always hleb and walcott. and arsenal have 3 good european strikers to step in (if adebayor is one of the first choice strikers)

  4. arsenal have djourou coming back and senderos is still there, so no worries about CB.

Chelsea are the ones who will really worry, although with Pizarro in the squad and the kids (sinclair and sahar) there too I doubt that they’ll be dead in the water.

  5. aprecciate what you are saying Ahmed but as a gunner I feel that is the worry exactly. Give them their due they are good players but they lack organisation and composure! United have a significant advantage in the latter half of the season. If they are top come Christmas I’l consider it to be well and truly over!

  6. I think another team that will stuggle will be Newcastle without Martins and geremi! definitely if owen isn’t properly fit.

  7. Ahmed
I think Sahar got loaned to QPR and then broke his leg in training so that leaves them with Pizarro and Sheva and I hope Ivory Coast and Ghana go all the way 😉

  8. Liam,

Sahar is due back in January according to his loan deal – haven’t heard about the leg break but I assume he will be fit for January?

Pizarro, Sheva and Sinclair – for a team that can play 4-5-1 masquerading as a 4-3-3 that’s not bad.

  9. Just a correction…Mido is in middlesbrough now. match to watch…chelsea vs liverpool. Wonder what will be the result without drogba, kalou, essien and mikel!

  10. SPL team Hibernian will suffer a big loss with Sol Bamba playing for the Ivory Coast. He has been outstanding all season and will definitely play for a big club in England (if Celtic or Rangers don’t get in first).
