List of potential summer targets for Manchester United
In the news today (and in yesterday’s article on Manchester United’s 3 summer targets), a lot of names popped up as potential targets.
Over at the Red Rants blog, we (I) looked at all the options one by one, and evaluated their chances of coming to Manchester United. Here’s a quick look:
Possible transfer targets for Manchester United
- Hargreaves
- Berbatov
- Ribery
- Torres
- Huntelaar
- Nani
- Bale
- Richards
- Tevez
In addition, I also looked at other potential Manchester United targets such as Bent, Defoe, Pedersen and Manchester United’s defensive needs.

No Wesley Sneijder?
May 9th, 2007 @ 01:09Depends on why you think United would be after him
May 9th, 2007 @ 01:22No Nakamura??
that guy is class.. plus he’s an amazing corner/freekicker… one of the most dissapointing aspects of uniteds game this season was ronaldo’s freekicks.
even from the business side of things it makes perfect sense..i mean that guy is a star in japan.. having him on the team would make ManU even more marketable/ more people would be interested in ManU
no mention at all Ahmed?
May 9th, 2007 @ 01:31What about Gudjohnson? He was rumoured earlier in the season to be a target, wasn’t he?
May 9th, 2007 @ 01:49He’s experienced and he’s played (successfully) in the Premiership. His transfer would be similar to the signing of Larsson this season.
He’s a player who can provide cover for Saha/Rooney without have to settle into the Premiership’s style.
Speaking of Barcelona players, Saviola is supposedly going to be sold off in the summer.
Saviola has just been offered a new contract (FINALLY!), so we’ll have to see what happens on that one.
May 9th, 2007 @ 02:43Ferguson in his interview said,” we are looking at both the owens (michael owen & owen hargreaves) & three other targets”.You forgot to mention michael owen – Ahmed.
May 9th, 2007 @ 10:28What interview was that Chintan?
May 9th, 2007 @ 11:37yup jonijapan! nakamura rocks!
May 9th, 2007 @ 13:30arteta, sidwell?
May 9th, 2007 @ 13:30Well, they’re all great names. And I don’t think we’d be disappointed to see any of them bowl up at Carrington come July.
Personally I’d think Ribery is Emirates-bound (provided Arsene can convince Hill-Wood to remortgage).
Berbatov, Huntelaar and Torres share two qualities that make them attractive to United: quality and height! For this reason, I don’t see Tevez as a real option (also Gill/Glazers won’t fancy negotiating with Kia Joorabchian. Personally, I’d also rule out Bent, Defoe and Owen on height grounds (although if they’re available cheaply then they’d be more than useful to have in the squad).
I don’t get the Richards rumours. I know we need a long term replacement for Gary Nev but will Richards be happy to play reserve team football when the captain is available?
Nani sounds like he’s worth a punt (at the right price). As long as people don’t expect him to be quite as good as Ronaldo.
Bale… have to admit I’ve only seen this guy play once but from what I’ve heard he’s good going forward (although not good enough to be an out-and-out winger) but a rather naive defensively. Don’t we already have someone like that… Kieran Richardson anyone?
May 9th, 2007 @ 14:07Ben-Kieran Richardson is not good going forward.
May 9th, 2007 @ 14:28Well I did say he’s not good enough to be an out-and-out winger. He is good enough to be a… to be a… ah, no I see your point, Nick.
May 9th, 2007 @ 14:47what man united lack this year was a decent free kick taker ( even after beck ham no one was in united). and this vacancy can be filled only by Tavez , so no one cares wither the Glazer family fancy negotiating with MSI or not , what fergi needs is a team that can protect this year champ for next year and to avoid the humiliation that he faced in Ac Milan.
May 9th, 2007 @ 17:26Nani fuels the speculation

May 9th, 2007 @ 21:41i saw it on sportcenter
May 10th, 2007 @ 17:30We need Defenders.
May 20th, 2007 @ 21:54We dont really, because Jonny Evans who is a top defender will be coming back from Sunderland during the summer.
May 21st, 2007 @ 16:42johnny evans wud probably be loaned out to a premiership team next year like blackburn ( to replace their aging defenders ) or to remain at keano’s sunderland…
May 21st, 2007 @ 18:12What about Torres??
Wud any1 explain to me the possibilities of his arrival at Old Trafford??
And I feel signing :
1.Kompany(CB)
2.(Or)Sergio Ramos(CB)
3.Rafael Van der Vaart(CAM/RLWM)
4.Castro(RB)
Can MORE than Solve ManU’s problems…
And of Course Torres….[:P]
May 22nd, 2007 @ 12:35And Yeah I play FIFA-07….[:P]
May 22nd, 2007 @ 12:36I THINK TEVEZ WILL BE A GOOD TAGET BECOZ OF HIS SPEED,STAMINA PLUS THE GUY IS A GOOD FREEKICK TAKER AHD WE DEFINATELY NID THAT.WHAT ABOUTA RIGHT BACK,WE SEEERIOUSLY NID THAT TOO.
May 25th, 2007 @ 17:49I don’t think that Teves must play for United, because he is south american and nobody from this corner of the world has played enough good for any English team. Only Hainze is playing, but it has other style. south footballers are not suitables for English Premiership.
June 6th, 2007 @ 22:33I think the best ones will be Huntelaar, Hargreavs and one defenser prebebly: Kaladze
Van der Vaart would be really sweet. He would fit perfectly. With his going up and he has great free kicks.
With forwards i look and Saha and dont see him being there next season.
June 20th, 2007 @ 07:51I wont want man u 2 sell ronaldo but i will want fergusn 2 kip n bench him 4 d hole season. I will want man u 2 buy a (RB) and a striker like luis fabiano or barbetov selling saha n mikel silvestre.
June 23rd, 2008 @ 12:46i see Ozil in Man Utd.
July 3rd, 2010 @ 10:38And Gonzalo Higuain and Modris see the premier league of Man Utd.
July 3rd, 2010 @ 10:45
