Whistle is needed, when player asks wall to be replaced. Giggs or Rooney did not ask for that. I have seen many goals of this kind and never there has been so much pointless fuss about it. Please people check the rule book.

Was the free kick legal? Yes.

After that a debate on gentlemanly behavior becomes a bit unrelevant, because Lille were complaining that the free kick was not legal, not that it was unsporting.

It was unsporting behavoiur by Giggs, Rooney has carried ball to the spot of kick, so no advantage rule applies (Quickly taken free kick is a form of advantage rule). Play was stoped. ref was standing at spot.

Now rooney places the ball, and giggs hits it? Very very smart indeed….

I dont blame giggs,Ref shoud be blamed.
First ting when ref should do when he stands by spot is to ask player to wait for wistle before direct free kick.
Its the un written rule in whole world.

Before handling Lille any punishment, ref’s License should be revoked. I dont think UEFA has to hold on to faulty ref’s.

NB: Quickly taken free kicks are ussualy indirect, not that u cannt put right into , but its not gentleman thing.

Tomorrow if some one says, there is no rule to put ball out when player is injured, and goes on and score a goal, do u still say SMART THINKING?

This free-kick is really generated too much of a fuss as it really was perfectly legal. Very sad to see such troubles in football especially when there are no obvious reasons. Lille really is unexperienced bunch of crybabies.

I would love to see Manchester United thumping their asses heavily in return leg at Old Trafford.
