Bayern Munich striker Robert Lewandowski took just nine minutes to score five goals to lead the Bavarians to a comeback win over Wolfsburg last night. It was a night which saw records being broken left, right and centre, and Bayern’s Polish international rightly brought the football world to a standstill with his incredible striking display.

Lewandowski will now be the perfect exemplar for a super-sub in footballing dictionaries; the 27-year-old was a bench-warmer in the first half, but was summoned after the interval as Bayern trailed 1-0 at the break. And what ensued thereafter will be etched in gold in the annals of football.

The Pole came on at the start of the second half, replacing midfielder Thiago Alcantara. He started his scoring streak in the 51st minute, and didn’t stop until after eight minutes when he scored his fifth and final goal in the 60th minute. It was a rare display of pure striking quality, not to be witnessed any time soon.

Here is a short video of his five-goal salvo, an incredible array of gold standard attacking play from Lewandowski.

Even his manager Pep Guardiola was stunned, who surely aimed at recovering after going behind but not this quickly. He said after the game, “I’ve never experienced anything like that in my life! Five goals in nine minutes! Wow! I may never see anything like that again, either.”

Here is how the Spaniard reacted to Lewandowski’s fifth goal, and it’s priceless!

Lewandowski was himself surprised at how quickly the goals came about. He said, “I have no idea how quick my hat-trick was, maybe five minutes? Okay, it was a bit quicker than that.”

His record set social media ablaze as he is currently the most trending topic on the internet. Here are some of the reactions from last night.

RECORD BREAKER

– Lewandoswki broke quite a few records on the way, and most notably became the fastest ever hat-trick scorer in Bundesliga history. He then set out to become the fastest scorer of four and five goals in a Bundesliga match.

– He became the first substitute to score more than a hat-trick in the Bundesliga.

– Lewandowski narrowly missed Dieter Muller’s Bundesliga record of six goals in a game.

– His was a new record for the fastest five-goal haul in world football.

– Lewandowski is the third Bayern player to score five in a game – Gerd Muller did so three times, and Dieter Hoeness once.

Earlier this season, Cristiano Ronaldo also took the footballing world by storm by scoring five in a single game against Espanyol, but the impact of Lewandowski’s goals was greater considering Wolfsburg are one of their main domestic rivals and they were even leading at the time of the striker’s introduction.

Here are some of the stupendous five-goal hauls in recent memory.

1) Cristiano Ronaldo for Real Madrid v Espanyol

Ronaldo emphatically broke his duck for the 2015/16 season by netting an early hat-trick and then completing his second career five-goal haul in Real Madrid’s 6-0 win over Espanyol.

2) Lionel Messi for Barcelona v Bayer Leverkusen

Messi became the first player to score five goals in the Champions League in Barcelona’s 7-1 romp over Bayer Leverkusen in a round of 16 tie at the Camp Nou in 2012.

3) Cristiano Ronaldo for Real Madrid v Granada

The Portuguese superstar notched his first career five-goal haul last season when he helped Real Madrid to a 9-1 thrashing of lowly Granada, although it counted little as it did not help Real Madrid win the league title.

4) Dimitar Berbatov for Manchester United v Blackburn Rovers

Berbatov netted five goals in a Premier League game against Blackburn Rovers in the 2010/11 season in Manchester United’s 7-1 romp at Old Trafford.
