Latest Transfer News: Tottenham, West Ham, Newcastle United, Manchester City, Manchester United, Chelsea, Aston Villa, Bolton, Portsmouth, Sunderland, Fulham and others
A quick look at the transfer rumours doing the rounds – as the 31st August deadline approaches, things just keep getting crazier and crazier.
Manchester City and Manchester United moving in for Bolton’s Anelka
Both City and United could ideally use 1 more striker and as a result both teams have been linked to a host of different strikers. I thought at the start of the summer that Anelka would move if the chance for playing for a bigger team than Bolton comes around and I still think that he could jump in the last week of August.
I doubt that Manchester United would take him up though. And City? Possible, and he’d be a deadly addition to the side. However with City being linked to Nuno Gomes as well (free transfer), not sure if Eriksson would spend 12m.
Aston Villa after Tottenham’s Jermain Defoe.
With a 15m price-tag, Defoe is not the best ‘bargain’ but he desperately needs regular football to resurrect his career and Aston Villa could give him that chance.
I doubt that Aston Villa would pay the 15m, but Defoe isn’t going to get many chances at Tottenham and it’s time he moved on (and Villa would be as good a place as any).
Aston Villa after West Brom’s Curtis Davies
Aston Villa have reportedly after 8m while West Brom want 12m. Does this mean that Tottenham are not after Davies?
At any rate, this whole circus around Davies was tiresome last time around, and it’s worse this time. West Brom are quoting very high prices but considering the way the transfer market is going, you can’t be too surprised. Davies would go for 5m, not more.
Will Villa get him? Not so sure, as with Defoe, that they’d splash excessive money around.
Newcastle United’s Luque to join Ajax for free
He cost 9.5m and reportedly earns 60k/week in wages. Newcastle have had a lot of problems in offloading the player and the Sun suggests that Newcastle may waive the transfer fee in order to facilitate the transfer and take the burden off Newcastle United’s wage bill.
But for Ajax to take him on board he’d have to take a cut in wages, right? Presumably he’s not happy with that. Newcastle would also want some money for the player so it’s possible they’ll do a loan deal with both clubs sharing the player’s wages.
Manchester City to sign Benfica’s Nuno Gomes for free
If this goes through, it’ll be another smart signing for Manchester City. The squad has gelled quickly but I’d like to see City go up against the likes of Reading, Blackburn and Everton and see if they have what it takes to battle it out. Gomes should add depth if he comes, but that’s about it.
Manchester City after Celta Vigo’s Borja Oubina
The hunt for Barton’s replacement in City’s midfield goes on. It’ll be interesting to see who City end up signing. I hear that Darren Fletcher might be available?
Dynamo Kiev to sign Chelsea’s Shevchenko on loan
Added here purely because the rumour is so rubbish.
Real Betis after West Ham’s Bobby Zamora
Hmmm, really? Why Zamora, of all the people? Don’t think West Ham will sell if this is true, but if I was Magnusson I’d sell right away, especially if I was able to get Anelka.
Portsmouth’s Stefanovic to talk to Rangers
Pompey are better off keeping him for this season – depth and serious Premiership campaigns and all that.
Sunderland to sign Sammy Kuffour
He’s been training with Sunderland and should probably sign (for free, like Andy Cole) by Monday. Good piece of business, this.
But Gravesen doesn’t want Fulham. I’m not surprised, are you?

Why the sideways slur at Fulham?
August 24th, 2007 @ 23:50Mark my words you’re going to see some good battling displays this term – with a fair amount of skill & panache.
Appears without Gravesen, though.
As a newcastle supporter I can confirm that Gravesen has been linked with a transfer to someone’s midfield ever single window. He like a convieniant name t mention as he never moves but is recognisable enough for poeple to say hmmm. He wont move to fulham. Not because Fulham suck, me likey Smerta big time (though the fact you did the double on us last year is embarrassing), but becasue its a bullcrud rumour.
