Larsson to play against Manchester United for Europe XI
Here we were hoping that Larsson’s stay for Manchester United would be extended for another day (let alone another 2 months) so he could play in the Manchester United v Europe XI game, and now (for once) the advertisers have pulled off a smart move by including Larsson in the Europe XI squad instead.
Larsson will line up alongside players from Barcelona, Lyon, Liverpool and Real Madrid (surprisingly, no Bayern or Italian players called up yet) to play Manchester United at Old Trafford next week on 13th March.
Larsson didn’t do much for Manchester United in his last few games but he’s been a popular figure at Old Trafford with fans and teammates alike. Ferguson brought him in as striking cover (to keep Saha fresh for the last 10-15 games of the season) and as a positive influence on the training ground, and by all accounts the experiment has been hugely successful.

Am I the only one who is totally pissed at Larsson for ‘deserting’ us at this crucial stage? I mean, how ‘professional’ can he be by leaving us at the time when United needed him most with Rooney’s and Solksjaer’s injury and Scholes suspended.
In my mind, he was never a true Man U player, just a mercenary player. Maybe that’s why he is always considered the ‘professional’. No loyalties involved.
Andy, he has a young family. You cannot force your will upon someone just because it’ll make you happier (or in this case, better covered in the attacking line-up). He has his reasons and he did not break any promises. So let’s be thankful enough that he served us well for the games that he had played!
Larsson was a true professional. Truly committed to his cause. His cause was to come here on-loan, and he did not return before his loan period was dued.
Be fair, be like a true United fan. Don’t act like unreasonable Scousers or Londoners
Its a real pity that Larsson is leaving. Would have loved to have him for the remainder of the season, but, United management must have known from the beginning that it would be impossible, otherwise they would have made the deal from the beginning already. I mean, you don’t pay someone 100k p/w if you’re not sure he’ll adapt to the PL.
We have to respect his wishes.
I wonder if he will be elligible to play should a “striker crisis” hit United after he’s gone back?
Have to say, thumbs up to Fergie!!!
This was a masterpiece of how to manage players by stroking their confidence. I mean, he managed to make Saha feel confident by seemingly showing faith in him, yet he must have doubted Saha’s abilities(otherwise he never would have signed Larsson in the first place). I mean really, the “exemplary professional”, “off the ball running”, “finnishing”, “experienced”, etc. Is that not what Solksjaer was there for?
I don’t mean anything bad by this Larsson move because I too love him to bits. But, seriously, lets call apples…apples.
Well said, Raymond. But I’m also sad to see Larsson leave, for exactly the reason you mentioned: he made us better covered in attack.
See, this is what I don’t understand. If it’s about being with the family, isn’t there some possibility of the family joining him at Manchester temporarily for 3 months until this crucial stage is over? He’ll still get to be with his family. But maybe there are other reasons, nobody seems to be saying.
I mean there’s no denying he has made some contribution and I would like to acknowledge that. Just that leaving at this crucial stage (with so many strikers out), I seriously think it will affect the team morale and form. Let’s hope I’m wrong on that.
While I’m not expecting him to, but seriously, I would expect a true Red to help out the team in times of need. So that’s where my frustration lies so I don’t think I’m being too unreasonable to voice that out.
