Kris Boyd to leave Rangers for Aston Villa or Birmingham

Rangers striker Kris Boyd is reportedly on the verge of deciding between pre-contract agreements from Aston Villa and Birmingham City.

A strong rumour circulated Rangers’ fans forum websites last night and their nightmare became a reality when Sky Sports News confirmed this afternoon that according to their sources, Boyd was in talks with Martin O’Neil and Alex McLeish. Boyd has 19 goals this season and the fear around Ibrox is that if Kris Boyd is sold then Rangers will not win the SPL Championship.

Boyd has enjoyed success under Walter Smith

The departure of the Rangers striker has been a possibility ever since Walter Smith publicly confirmed in October that the banking group Lloyds were effectively running the football club. After the 1-1 draw with Hibs back in October, Smith said: “As far as I’m concerned the bank is running Rangers. Sir David has stepped down and a representative of the bank has been placed on the board. It’s not a situation anybody wants the club to be in. And it’s not the bank’s fault as they are not going to invest in a club.

“We haven’t bought a player in nearly 18 months but I’m not going to complain because I’m perfectly aware of the situation.

It is believed that the bank had sanctioned a contract offer for the Rangers striker with an increase on his current contract, but despite Boyd wanting to stay and being a life-long Rangers supporter, the fans aren’t too confident of Boyd remaining at Ibrox past next season. This could spark a major uproar from the Rangers support as Rangers Supporters Trust Spokesman David Edgar admitted the Rangers fans would be happy to boycott season-tickets for next season if Boyd was sold.

Boyd is adored by the Rangers fans and would be sadly missed

As a Rangers fan, I have to admit if Kris Boyd was leave to Rangers it would stink of a complete lack of ambition. Boyd will win Rangers the championship, he has improved his overall game significantly and if he continues to score goals and improve his technical skills then he could be a regular starter for Rangers, even in ‘bigger’ matches like Celtic or Champions League games were he was previously overlooked. There is no better striker available to Rangers, there is no better striker in Scotland and Rangers simply won’t be able to sign a replacement.

However, if Boyd was to leave, you have to question if he really was a “life-long” Rangers fan. The former Kilmarnock striker has been offered an increase, so why not sign it?

No disrespect to the clubs interested in Kris Boyd, but I simply cannot see any reason why Kris Boyd would want to leave Rangers. He is getting a relatively good amount of money, the chance to win titles and trebles, the chance to play Champions League football and play infront of a support that adores him. Why would you go to Villa or Birmingham if the reason wasn’t money-orientated?

One things for sure, Rangers will want something sorted over the next few days and the nightmare that the Rangers tried to dismiss, is now becoming reality.

Why would Kris boyd leave Rangers !!!!!!!.
Thats a hard one for a start to play in the greatest league in Europe..
Champions league. What champions League Rangers are normally knocked out by September.
Oh and possibly the chance to double his money.
But apart from that he must stay at Rangers .

Sorry Rosstheger but i simply had to respond to the above article.. Whilst i can sympathise with you being a Rangers Fan & understand just how frustrating it must be to see your best players linked with moves to Premiership clubs all the time, I simply cannot let you get away with mentioning Villa & Blues as though they are two clubs of the same “pointless going unless it’s for the money” type.

    Reason:

Aston Villa: 8 league titles, 7 FA cups, 6 League/ coca cola cups, 1 European cup & European super cup.

Birmingham City: No major trophies in their history of any kind!!!!

We won’t even go down the Fan base / stadium quality route.

Also Villa have just got to this years League cup final at Wembley & are making a serious challenge on 4th place as well as qualifying for the Europa league again last season.

It is not like comparing Celtic & Rangers who have both won numerous titles & cups, Nothing like it.

I can see your point with a move to Blues being a money issue but to put Villa in the same mould is indeed very disrespectful to their proud history & recent achievements. Have Rangers won the European cup?

As for the player in question having a lack of ambition if he moves? …Really? Surely not.

How can playing in the Premiership possibly be showing a lack of ambition when compared to playing in Scotland? He may miss out on automatic qualification to the Champs League every season but is there really any achievement in that when playing for Celtic or Rangers? I mean lets be a little honest here the competition isn’t exactly hot up there now is it? Indeed if more of the Scottish players got some experience in the Premiership, Italy or Spain it could only have a huge impact on your national teams quality in the long run surely. So no, Whilst understandably disappointing from a Rangers fans viewpoint the player has to be applauded for trying to improve himself & test himself against the very best week in week out.

Also from the buzz round here in Birmingham it sounds as though Villa are not even in for the guy anyway.. Just the media trying to rustle up some “Villa Blues after the same player” nonsense!

The EPL may well have the best players in the world but of them how many clubs are gonna win things, like its fine and dandy coming forth in the league but would it light up a pub with lots of singing and dancing to celebrate ?nope,Everton Villa Tottenham are always gonna just be behind the big 4,despite where they are in the table at the moment.
People realistically only celebrate winning championships and cups coming 2nd 3rd or 4th does nothing for you

    danceoftheshamen,

The ‘lack of ambition’ I was talking about was to do with the club itself. Not Kris Boyd.

I’m not trying to put down Aston Villa and Birmingham in any way. Sorry if I came across in that tone, I certainly wasn’t meaning that in any way. Aston Villa are a club with major potential and a very good history, and as you mentioned, the European Cup. But apart from money, what really else can he do by going to Villa?

Lets be 100% honest here, will he play regularly for Aston Villa? I’m not so sure.

I see it from two-sides, it is either Kris Boyd wanting more money or Rangers not offering him a contract. For a “life-long” Rangers supporter, if you weigh up both sides, I can’t see why he would want to leave the club.

I accept your point about Aston Villa’s European Cup successes etc, but Nottingham Forest have won the European Cup, Aberdeen have won the Cup Winners Cup – should that having a bearing say Kris Boyd was wanted by both clubs?
Fair enough, Aston Villa have won the European Cup. But their success and stature just doesn’t compare to Rangers at all. The one thing they have over Rangers is money. And better players :D
