Well, looks like Liverpool already regret giving up on Keane. After Gerrard limped off in the 16th minute against Everton in the F.A. Cup, they could have slotted Keane into his preferred space behind Torres. Instead, Rafa's petulance and desire to stick it to the board caused him to sacrifice his team's depth. I wonder what will happen if Torres goes down with another injury. The Liverpool fans who have been clamoring for that Ngog/Kuyt partnership will get their wish.

@ Bongo: I appreciate about Dacourt, but if you speak to Inter fans, I know a number of them are disappointed that he wasn't given more games there. He was superb in the premiership, and just covering the back four, maybe giving Murphy license to go forward could be great for Fulham

And RE Everton, no question they are fine, but with regards to the window, and more generally, it's a shame that they failed to bring more in, which Moyes has admitted (missing out on Kuranyi). And as well as this, they missed out on some guys in the summer, and with rotten injury luck, I dont think that they will kick on as much as they could

RE Quaresma: I understand he might have failed elsewhere, but he's not had long at Inter or been given a chance, much like Keane at Liverpool, and we know what a quality player he is. And if you remember, he was at Barca, and before he got a chance to do well he was out for over a year with a horrific injury. Blast me if he fails, but I think this guy has got some serious ability.

btw can i just say quaeresma is an awful buy for chelsea as what they really need is a striker who isn't stroppy and that has a consistent run of form as anelka has fallen behind in recent weeks along with kalou who is not up to the task and was lucky to get 2 goals against middlesborough. Scolari has no idea how to work a premierleague team and never has a plan b in a match when things are not going right.

I dont understand tottenham cos u look at the players they have in their squad and it is incredible that they are not competing for champions leauge places alongside villa and arsenal, but i agree that the passion has gone out of tottenham as no player i have watched with the exception of o'hara would die for the badge. My advice to Redknapp cut players who do not give their full otherwise suffer the consequences of a team with no drive. they all say they fight for tottenham but when they get on the pitch their to scared to put a foot into a challenge (SORT IT OUT REDKNAPP!!!!!!!!!!)

A good, sensible article, particularly for the sense of perspective regarding the Liverpool situation. In terms of how the team performs, losing Keane won't make much difference at all. But the wider implications of the Keane debacle serve as a damning indictment on the running of LFC. Would it be reasonable to conclude from the hit they've taken on Keane, and the lack of a replacement, that Liverpool are, if not exactly desperate for cash, then happy to recoup any money they can? The future certainly doesn't look clever at all. This season looks like being the best chance Liverpool have of winning the title for some years to come...

Everton are fine. There are only 14 games left this season and the squad is more than fine for that. Besides, we're in recession and now is not the time to be spending anything you can't afford. Not doing business this January might be the best business done. Moyes has a solid team, a good crop of youngsters and isn't worried about relegation like half the league. He also has a rule of not bringing players in for the sake of it so I'm glad we were quiet this January (nobody left).

Also Dacourt is not a 'sensational' signing. He's 34 and age is catching up with him.

Agrre with Duffman on Quaersma.

Don't agree with the Spurs assessment. In my opinion the revolving door of managers and players at Spurs over the last few years is why they find themselves where they are. Who in that squad would die for the badge?

You sometimes wonder what is Levy smoking!

I suspect so as well. Although it'll show more in the small clubs like Portsmouth who can stretch themselves so fat but perhaps don't have the infrastructure to fall back on. Leeds United was in many ways a blessing for the rest of the football world, and should serve as a warning. But football's a funny game, and pressure to do well will make owners/boards do funny things, and one or two might overstretch...

Couldn't agree more Andy, although I suspect it's the tip of the iceberg with several other clubs about to go the same way.

Do you think the Premier League is about to become a victim of its own success?
