agree about Kuyt, but do think with the right coaching, Sissoko and especially Babel could be great players.

as a Man United fan, I've noticed (and enjoyed) over the years the tendency of Liverpool managers to sign players who add depth to, but don't significantly improve the quality of the squad. Torres was a step in the right direction and for Benitez to win the Prem he'll need to bring in more bona fide match winners, who'll regularly find a goal/assist when the team are up against it. he has a great squad, but seems reluctant to move for stars (though to be fair, he's only had large funds available for a short while).

hate to be smug, but can't help comparing to Man Utd, where the presence of Rooney, Ronaldo, Tevez, Giggs etc guaranteed at least 1 goal however awfully United performed in recent weeks and Liverpool only really have 2 attacking players of that ilk at the moment...not that I'm complaining!

Very well written article Shaun, you obviously have a very in depth knowledge of football and it's refeshing to see an honest and idiosyncratic view in the world of football for a change.

I dont think think we can blame 'simple steve' because the simple fact is English players are not as good as thier European and South American counterparts. As you said with the exception of Gerrard and Rooney things look dyer; the phrase world class (Lampard chirst sake) is banded about to often in the case of English players and we pay for this in raised expectations and dissapointments.

I ll look forward to reading more of your post soon

I think the main disappointment with Liverpool this season is Ryan Babel, who hasn't exactly set the EPL alight this season. Also I'm disappointed about Mo Sissoko, who's first touch and passing has been atrocious all season. Dirk Kuyt, can't fault his work rate but he's up there to score goals. I think that Voronin and Torres is a definite partnership he could stick with, because it's a good strong pairing of a ball winner and a ball runner, and most importantly they're both continental players. I think now taht Yossi Benayoun has started a few games we will see a very very underated talent. But I'm just disappointed on the whole with Liverpool at the moment.

Thanks for reading Randy :)
