Is Wes Brown’s Career Over At Manchester United?

Written by Subhankar Mondal

Wes Brown – Manchester United

Wes Brown is not a household name in the world of football and at 28 years, he has have had just 12 international caps for England and there is a considerably good chance that he may not get many more. And also distinctly possible is the fact that he will have to search for a new club at the end of the season.

The Manchester United defender have had his full share of chances so far this season in the absence of right back and Man United captain Gary Neville who is still trying to recover from a string of injuries. In this context Brown’s snub of a new four-year deal proposed by the club is quite mysterious.

Wes Brown has been a Man United player since he left school and although he has not always been a first choice defender, he did have had his chances and United manager Sir Alex Ferguson had kept faith in him. But now that Brown’s contract runs out at the end of the season and the player’s agent has disagreed on a new four deal, Sir Alex is contemplating on letting the player go.

This is what Sir Alex had to say on the Brown affair:

He has not agreed anything, which is entirely up to Wes, we feel we have made him a good offer. We’ve met with his agent. They’ve rejected our last offer so that is the end of it. We won’t be going back.

So is Brown soon to be come an ex Manchester United player? Sir Alex says:

It’s a possibility. It would be a disappointment.

Disappointment indeed, as much as in losing the player as in losing a transfer fee on the player. Although Sir Alex denies that he is mulling over of selling the player during the January transfer season for a transfer fee, he must have realized that Brown would become a free agent in the summer and Manchester United would lose out on any transfer fee.

So is Wes Brown’s not-so-illustrious career at Old Trafford finally over? If so, which club would he be heading to? Would Man United be able to replace Wes Brown? And more importantly, would the player himself be able to develop himself more and become better at a club other than Old Trafford?

  1. i think Brown is over estimating his own worth due to Neville’s injury problems. the truth is that whilst he has done well since Neville’s injury he must mental if he thinks he is good enough to attract an offer from another team (Newcastle?) which will beat the 50 grand per week utd have supposedly offered him.

  2. Brown would be first choice center-back in most teams outside the top four (and would probably pip Agger / Hyppia / Hobbs for the second center-back spot at Pool). Newcastle and Tottenham both would pay him loads to shore up their defensive troubles, perhaps his agent has been sounded out by one of those clubs (could be Pool too).

And Brown’s pretty much first-choice for this season, considering that Neville’s not going to play much this season and if things continue, not much next season either.

Ahmed – no way Brown would play ahead of Agger at Liverpool. Agger is an outstanding defender and Liverpool have looked dodgy at the back every time he has been missing.

  4. Brown is a very solid center back but i dont think he could make Agger stay on bench due to the way Agger has played at Pool, you just dont change players if they work well and Agger/Carragher did great last season.

    His future is at United

I have absolutely no idea what Wes is thinking. I’m sure his agent is whispering £80k a week wages in his ear or something, but he will never have it better than he does at United. Plus it’s his home, he’s been there since he was a teenager! He’s got maybe 2 years left in him at the top of his game, and he’ll more than likely start at least 1 of those as Manchester United’s starting Right Back. What more does he want?

  6. Gary Neville is a fantastic player but like Giggs and Scholes he is getting old, and Wes Brown, aged 28, is no realistic replacement for him. Wes Brown wants first team football regularly, so let him go. We should be looking to find a good young right back. Micah richards would be nice if City would let him go, perhaps they could take Brown instead :) . Sounds like a good trade to me, Micah is still in contract talks with City and i’m sure he would be alot happier playing for a decent club with a chance of actually winning something. He has, if im correct, 18 months left on his contract and City are not going to risk him walking for free at the end of that period, so chances are they will take the cash.
