Is this Martin Jol’s last season at Tottenham?

Written by Ahmed Bilal. Tagged: Juande Ramos - Managers - Tottenham

There has been a lot of speculation in the press recently about Martin Jol’s future at Tottenham, including reports that the Tottenham board has sounded out Juande Ramos and Jurgen Klinsmann as potential replacements as Tottenham manager.

I DON’T think that the board will be so rash as to replace Jol after giving him this much money to spend, but on the other hand if they feel that Jol is not doing the job that he should be doing and if they see this season as THE season (seeing United’s problems there’s no reason why Spurs shouldn’t think that they have a good chance), then they might take action quickly.

I’m not convinced, but for the sake of argument let’s consider the possibility of Ramos or Klinsmann being contacted with a view towards one of them coming to White Hart Lane. In my view both of these managers would have been sounded out for next season and not this one.

Should Ramos come to Tottenham? If he sticks around in Spain for another season, he could probably get a shot at either the Barcelona or the Real Madrid job. He’s got Champions League football to be a part of, after winning two consecutive Uefa Cups. I don’t see a manager leaving that behind to go to a new team AFTER the season has started and with the transfer season over (or almost over), especially a team that’s not in the Champions League.

Klinsmann - well-loved, good trainer and tactician (from what we saw of Germany in the World Cup that is) but in terms of experience he would be a gamble.

Don’t see any manager being called in like this on such a knee-jerk reaction, don’t see either manager agreeing to come like this either, and I really don’t see Jol doing too badly compared to the last two seasons. 5th spot may or may not come, and CL football may or may not come but Tottenham are pretty sure to get into Europe again and that in itself, in the long run, is a very good accomplishment.

As for the ‘can Martin Jol take Tottenham to the Champions League’ question, that’s a whole different story and right now, not relevant. Right now, Tottenham are thinking of taking 3 points from Manchester United at Old Trafford, and while it might have been ‘possible’ in the past, they would surely be fancying their chances now.

  1. We need someone who is willing to attack instead of being scared. If Jol learns from his failures in the Cups against Arsenal and Chelsea then fair play. If he does not, or will not, then he should go.

Our complaints about Jol are not “knee jerk reactions.” These issues have been present ever since he became Manager. Having said this, I don’t think the Board would replace him now without a sporting chance to turn the season around. Further, i have a hard time believing a major coach would come into this situation with the players we have and little opportunity to get different players in. So I think we’re stuck with Jol for at least one more season.

  3. But for some lousy refereeing we would have taken three points - Mendes from the halfway line…

As for Jol leaving - I very much doubt that will happen anytime soon. It’s all paper talk.

i like martin jol, it may be a likeable character thing rather than an achievement think,

lets be realistic, everyone is saying hes got us to 2 5th place finishes well fair play, but has anyone sat down to think that maybe its enics investments that have actually got us there? lets realy look at our performances last season, we were not superb and we also won games by being quite lucky too, BMJ says he knows what hes doing, well i realy wish he gets us to play a bit more as an attacking unit rather than having a midfield with 1 winger and sometimes no wingers and looking negative, we need to push players forwards, creating space and chances and also to be fit enough to get back and defend, just like arsenal, man utd etc, does he have the guts to do that? otherwise we are going no where. i hope this is a kick up his backside cos i have faith in him, so lets get behind him and lets hope he starts playing more of attacking mdfield rather than worrying about getting attacked, let the other teams worry about defending against us cos we are inviting teams to attack us they way he sets up the team.

this is hilarious, i can’t believe you actually want him out already! Surely your gonna get behind him, otherwise the job will be even tougher. As a gunner I do think he is a waste of space but he is the most positive manager spurs have had for ages. Pre-season you actually had us worried!

  6. Another article by a stirrer and little response from Spurs fans as they are starting to avoid this junk site. A read of the sensible comments by Frank Clark might stir the wrier and some of the fickle fans’ conscience but I’m sure they wouldn’t recognise that they refer to them in any way. We’re only 3 games into the season but with only 2 points surprised that people aren’t calling for SAF’s sacking-then again he’s coping with a few injuries so it’s understandable. Double standards and crap journalism…..

  7. This isn’t about the outcome of next Sunday result. Had teh team picked up the 6 points they lost during teh first 2 games then the outcome of next Sundays game wouldan’t have mattered much. Now it seems that should another 3 points be dropped then the knives are out and I cannot see Martin lasting. Why have the board though given him all that money to spend only to cick him out? It doesn’t make sense to me and it seems that teh board dont knwo what they are doing either.

Shouldn’t trhey have bought in a new manager before the start if they are planning to replace jol?

    to the gooner

what an idiot you are , ive noticed with gooners that they are not just biased but actually thick, as you said you were worried pr season, well my advice is, still be worried cos the injuries that we have can cripple a team and id like to see how arsenal will cope with the equivalent type of injuries and i will bring it to you,

if toure, gallas, clichy and one of your wingers lets say hleb and now van persie (cos berbatov is out) how would you cope? bearing in mind all of your left backs out as well,
you see when reality hits you you realy cant say much, you struggled to beat blackburn with most of your players playing and blackburn hit the post too, you guys better wish you win something this season otherwise whos gonna replace wenger cos its him whos holding you together no doubt

  9. i hate all these shit stories and shit replies from so called supporters! what 3 games in and “ohhh sack martin jol” how about fuck off/!!!! is everyone forgetting we have done nothing for like 20 yrs and jol got us to fin 5th twice……short memories you retards!!!
and go back to your jobs at mcd’s or whatever.

I think getting rid of Jol is the worst thing we can do.

Sure, none of us know whats going on behind the scenes at the club, but if you were to refer to the statistics then you have to say Jol is the most successful Premiership manager ever to grace the Lane. Face it, he’s turned it round. Most people are accepting that we had a good season last time out but you know what people aren’t picking up on? Last season’s start was worse than this one’s.

Lets look at the opening three games from last season then. Opening day we lose to Bolton 2-0, followed by a 2-0 home victory over Sheffield United, followed by a 2-0 home defeat by Everton.
    3 games, 3 points, 2 goals scored, 4 conceded.

And this season: We start off with a 1-0 defeat at Sunderland. Similarly we lose at home to Everton 3-1, followed by a 4-0 home win over Derby.
    3 games, 3 points, 5 goals scored, 4 conceded.

So statisticly this time round we’ve started better than we did in a season where we finished fifth. So who’s to say we can’t do it again and maybe even go one better.

    Crisis? What crisis?

  11. If he doesn’t win anything (or finish in the Top 3 - yes that’s right … THREE) then he’s gone I think.

  12. If the Dutch job becomes available after Euro 2008 then Martin Jol might leave anyway. How would we feel then ?

  13. I wish everyone would stop talking about Martin Jol getting the Dutch jo in the WC. That’s a part-time job that cannot be compared to managing THFC. If Jol wants that one more than this one, he’s just proven he’s stupid.

  14. The fact is that if Spurs are spending money on the scale of the big 4, but the manager cannot convert it into big 4 results then he should be replaced. Simple business sense and football sense. Let’s not hear about fickle or knee-jerk reaction - we are still Surs fans despite DECADES of under-achieving. I think Jol is a great guy, and not a bad manager - but that’s not enough for the fans or the board.

  15. Ahmed asks if Jol should be sacked after the third game.
Ahmed writes nice pros and cons as on after the third game.
Ahmed then decides Jol won’t be sacked after the third game.
What do we do, simply marvel.
Ahmed please post a nice pic of one of girlfriends of Tottenham players.:-P

  16. To Nick the Yid, Come on, are u going to insist that as a Spurs fan u are not biased in any way as well?? Just so you know Arsenal had an extremely long list of injuries as well. Gilberto, Adebayor, Rosicky, Eboue(which means that both wingers are out). Let’s not forget that Eduardo recently returned from an injury. And if there is one thing Spurs fans have always insisted is that Spurs have a greater depth in the team compared to arsenal and I too agree on that. Therefore the injuries that arsenal are suffering affects the team as much as the injuries to the Spurs team affect them. Are u seriously going to say that Arsenal have most of their players playing at Blackburn?

It is also ironic that while Spurs fans would call the arsenal fans thick for writing them off so many of you guys actually do the very same thing by writing arsenal off insisting that arsenal would finish in mid table. A typical case of the pot calling the kettle black.

In case you Spurs fans do not realise, Ahmed is merely writing this article to reflect his views. Just as you would
yourselves have your own opinions, Ahmed is entitled to speak his mind. If you do not agree with what he has written, simply state your argument and we shall all have a ball, diccussing it in a civilised manner. If the articles irk you that much, don’t read it!!

I shall end my comment with a quote by French Philosopher François Marie Arouet:
“I disapprove of what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it”
