I don't get it. Don't MLS players follow European/World football? How the hell do they NOT know who Ruud Gullit is?

I don't think anyone but the most hardcore Galaxy supporters care at this point. Los Angeles is an oddity; its citizens care less about their sports than any other urban media market in the United States.

James:

To give you an idea what he is working with, several of the younger Galaxy players had never heard of him. One went on YouTube, and once he saw a few videos, said "I can't believe some of the goals he scored."

How well he acclimates to the unique environment of MLS remains to be seen. He does not know the player pool, the college game that produces most of the domestic talent via a "draft," or a mainstream media that is indifferent but forced, due to demand, to cover the phenomenon that is Beckham. Given his television experience and natural flair, he should be a good fit for the entertainment value that AEG (investors of the Galaxy) desire to promote.

Appointing Cobi Jones (far right in the photo), who is the record cap holder for the USA (164), as his assistant coach was a wise move. He played his entire career for the Galaxy, and is well-respected. Jones has not coached before; however, he may provide a needed bridge between the players and Gullit. He will be an asset during his transition to American football. In some ways, Jones may hold the keys to Gullit's ultimate success. In terms of balancing out the football with the Hollywood influences that no doubt play a role in how this club is marketed and perceived.
