Is Ribery now out of Arsenal’s and Manchester United’s reach?

Written by Ahmed Bilal

With Marseille qualifying for the Champions League, Ribery’s asking price has shot up to 20m at least.

The big question now is - who can afford him, and which team will go after him?

Ribery has said time and again that he has one dream - to play in the CL with a big club (presumably so he has a chance of winning the damn thing). He’s not going to win the CL with Marseille, although he might impress enough to get a big transfer to Barcelona / Madrid / Inter / Chelsea.

Arsenal and Manchester United will both give Ribery a good chance to win the Champions League, and both Arsenal and Manchester United are looking for wingers.

But now that he’s reputed to cost 20m, will either Arsenal or Manchester United be willing to spend 20m+ on a very good player? Both clubs have money to spend but would rather spare it if they can. Both clubs are also attractive destinations - Arsenal has the French connection and United are the league champions.

Assuming that Chelsea are not dumping Robben and that Barcelona are keeping Ronny, can Arsenal and Manchester United beat out Madrid and Bayern for Ribery’s signature? Both clubs (Madrid and Bayern), by the way, are also interested in Robben.

There’s a real danger that after a certain point Arsenal could say that no, that’s way too much money for a player. Manchester United could do the same - they’ve been outbid in the last couple of years by Inter, Madrid and Chelsea (although money wasn’t the only case in all three cases).

So - is Ribery out of Arsenal’s and Manchester United’s reach now that Marseille are in the Champions League?

  1. [...] for Marseille, I say, but not so good for Manchester United. Marseille’s asking price for Ribery is now expected to hit 20m at least, and they know that [...]

  2. I’ll say only one thing- if 20m is too much for Hargreaves, it’s too much for Ribery too. period

Ribery is very very very very very very over-rated!!! The guy is 5ft8 or something, has decent pace but hardly beats people, was really poor in the world-cup after being dubbed the “next Zidane” and also wont suit the premiership. In my opinion, i think hes anothe Hleb. Highly rated but when he arrived, did nothing at all. If there is a winger that you should sign for £20 million then let it be Ricard Quaresma! Every team fears to play Portugal now due to Ronaldo and Quaresma on both flanks.

Also, Fergie, if you want a striker, dont splash it on Klass Huntelaar. Hes good but we dont want another Ruud because our football is very different to Klass and Ruud football. In my opinion, you should sign Darren Bent. Would cost around £10 million, possesses a lot of pace, link up well with Rooney because his height is not too bad. But a dream partnership will be Rooney and Berbatov :D.

Thats so stupid, Ribery has been saying that he wishes to play for Arsenal, ever since he heard that Arsenal wanted him. Manchester Utd wont buy him, because they are getting Hargreaves, Nani, and a striker. Ribery wants to play with his french teams mates, Gallas, and Henry, hes says “It would be a dream to play for such a great side”

  6. Marseille turned down an offer last summer of 24 million from Lyon, they have since been taken over by a billionaire & qualified for the champions league, so even if ribery did want to leave it would cost any suitor in excess of 30 million. He is not worth anything like that amount when you consider the other wingers who are better than him & would cost at least 10 million less, plus you have to consider the fact he has always maintained although he wanted to play champions league football he preferable wanted it at marseille.

  7. Anderson and Quaresma are cheaper and probably better. So no worries. We can do with or without him

  8. May I remind you that Marseille turned down a 20 million pound offer from Arsenal for Ribery in January!! If Wenger still wants him he will get him. Hill-Wood has approved 40 million for Wenger this summer according to the Guardian and the Times.

  9. i totally agree with tony montana.. id go for a rooney-e’to partnership.. eto is much more deadly a striker.. hes faster.. n his movement is to die for.. i think he’d b better than berbatov for this team simply becos his pace alongside ronaldo would simply mean.. a very much faster unit in attack.. i may be wrong tho..

If Marseille turned down a £20 million bid from Arsenal in January.
Then everyone who’s intrested in him will have to pay at lest 25 million+ for him.
I say bring in Ricardo Quaresma instead!- He is much faster, skillful, intelligent than Ribery is.
But if we bring both in!- WATCH OUT EUROPE!

  11. It’s certainly not out of Man UTD and arsenal reach….. This talented player once said that he will leave the club after he has played for Marseille to reach the Champions League. I bet that now Chelsea do not need a winger since they have J. Cole and Arjen Robben, Bayern is not in the Champions League…. Real Madrid busy trying to land kaka…. it’s probably up to Man Utd and Arsenal

  12. haha tony Montana is an idiot. ribery not impressive in the world cup? open your eyes and look where france got and how much of a role he played. and not everyone has to have crouch-eque stature to make a difference. all you english are just jealous because ribery is in bayern and is tearing it up now.
