The thing that lacked about Italy especially in the Euro 2008 was the balance of players. Italy can put experienced players; or they can put completely inexperienced newbies.

It is very simple: Italian players were at their peak in 2006; and now it has diminished. The creativity lacks and not many hot prospects can really bring Italy from its burden.

Donadoni instead put inexperienced players in the Euro 2008. Italy who were under pressure were yet to prove their creativity, and in my opinion; making a young squad at such a big tournament is really a wasteful bummer; and it is 100% sure that Italy wouldn't progress much in the Euro (considering other teams e.g. Spain), which they did exactly.

I am a fan of Italy, but dont' expect Lippi to win another World Cup. Four years is a long time and only a couple of teams have even been fortunate enough to get back to the finals of a WC, usually with a different coach.

However, I will defend his actions. Totti and Nesta are both aging and neither will likely be playing by 2010. Even if they are both on club teams, their roles will likely be diminished. Lippi is right to go with younger players.

Lippi is an terrific coach. One with experience and excellent decision making skills. He does not neccessarily need to win the World Cup to prove his worth again. all he needs to do now is to build Italy up and make it a fearsome force to be reckon with and qualify for every major tournaments. He have to make Italy a feared opponent not a team who will be trashed by a young Holland team

Lippi should have taken up club management. Italy aren't the same team, and other teams have improved post 06. It's not that Lippi can't do it, I don't think Italy can do it, which sucks because I was cheering Italy on in 06 and would love to seem win again (that is, unless England are winning...)
