Is Kevin Grosskreutz good enough for Liverpool?
Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers has come out and suggested that he is not going to have bags of money to spend in January which means the signing of winger Kevin Grosskreutz from Borussia Dortmund could be very realistic, but is he good enough for Liverpool?
Grosskreutz played a starring role for Dortmund last season as they secured another Bundesliga title. He started 26 games, made five substitute appearances, scored seven goals and created seven goals. This season he has been way off the pace with six starts, six sub appearances and no goals.
Despite the dip in his statistics, recent reports have suggested Liverpool will make a bid of £8 million for the player in January. Liverpool look as though they could sell winger Stewart Downing to fund any move for the German international but either way it’s a sign that Liverpool are restricted in terms of what they can spend throughout January.
The other problem that Liverpool face is getting Grosskreutz to agree to a move to Liverpool. He has recently stated that he would prefer a move to Manchester United as he wants to link up with Shinji Kagawa, one of his best friends from the pair’s days playing for Dortmund.
If Liverpool do manage to pull off a move for Grosskreutz then he could quickly find himself thrown in at the deep end in the hope that he can be effective and take some pressure away from Raheem Sterling.
The price for Grosskreutz is good, he seems to be available as he’s not a regular first team player for Dortmund this season but the club cannot force him into Anfield if he would rather go elsewhere.
