Really interesting article. I'm not sure that I share Mr Blanchard's logistical concerns regarding the introduction of an extra match official. Clearly his introduction would come with a brief about which official has hierarchical priority, and I'm sure that you wouldn't often want to ask the ref in the other half about incidents (why would you? he was much farther away than you were!). So this problem regarding the two refs arguing over decisions is essentially a mythological one.

In fact, having another ref would mean that each of the two would have to do less strenuous exercise, surely heightening their ability to make precise calls? Seems that way to me, anyway.

Steve: Can you drop a link to that article here?

Graham: I think a lot of times when refs are telling players to go away it's because they argue incessantly or start swearing even when the reasons have been given to them.

The bit about FIFA asking refs not to talk to the press is a bit strange, surprising that they would do this.

I wonder what Mr Blanchard thinks about the proposal to show automatic red cards to anyone who swears at the ref?

Referees really do put in a lot of effort which doesn't often get appreciated. Some people think they could make better choices, but the fact that the referees are doing tough physical exercise when making these tough decisions puts them in a league of their own.

Graham:

Before I interviewed Mr. Blanchard, I read one of his very informative articles on the FA Refereeing site about "Game Management." He discussed the importance of communication, and as we saw in this discussion, he elaborated on that important theme.

Nice interview Steve.

It is interesting that Mr Blanchard should say that communication with players, coaches and fans is crucial to the role of the referee. It seems to me that the communication aspect is sadly lacking a lot of the time with the top refs in England.

Players are not told why a decision has been given or why they are being cautioned and coaches are told to 'go away' if they seek answers to questions. As for the fans, well, FIFA actively encourage referees not to give interviews.

If Mr Blanchard has any influence, then I am optimistic for the future because he says all the right things.
