Is money an issue? Well eventually it has to be... how long can the FA afford to keep throwing extremely large amounts of money around with no success?

Where are they left if they pay Mourinho a cool 6 million a year and he achieves no more than say Sven? What then?

A much safer bet is the result-master Capello. He doesn't do it pretty, but he pretty much always does it!

I think price is not the main concern here. The FA have already spent so much on unsuccessful coaches, how much more can Mourinho ask for that is beyond the FA's means?

Furthermore, Mourinho has made the overture, for reasons of pride, he cannot go to the FA first. Since he is interested in the job, he will not be asking for the sky.

I think Barwick and the FA would pay virtually any price (within reason) for England success at international level. The big silent player in all of this (rescheduling key premiership fixtures etc.) is the Premier League, not the FA. If Mourinho really wants the job, he'll get it; although Capello and Zola might be the more shrewd choice.

As an aside, I disagree with you over Paul Jewell's choice of Derby over Wigan, Bolton and Ireland. Jewell has been pretty clever. He wanted to remain in club management, so that rules out Ireland. Derby is a good choice. Off the field, the club's potential and support is bigger than at either Wigan or Bolton. On the field he can't really lose: if he keeps them up he'll be hailed as a managerial genius; if he goes down, well everyone expected them to disappear down the tube anyway. Simply improving Derby's performances and keeping some slim hope alive, would rank as an achievement.

Jewell's been smart, by choosing Derby he has put himself under less pressure than he would have at either Bolton or Wigan, where he would have been expected to keep them up. Stress was one of the reasons he took a break from the game. He will be looking at Derby as a long term project. Over the next 3-4 years he could do rather well (relegation this season but then promotion and stabilisation in the EPL in the following seasons).
