Inter join the race to sign Manchester United defender

Reports in the press this morning suggest that Patrice Evra may be in demand in Italy when his contract expires at Old Trafford this summer. It’s been widely rumoured that the French full back would be part of the exodus of players moving on to make way for the new signings planned in Manchester United’s squad overhaul.

The report is that Inter Milan are keen to take Evra to the San Siro as part of their own rebuilding process and, although at 32 years old, it will not be a long term move, see the player as good free transfer acquisition. The same report states that Inter’s technical director was at the emirates to run the rule over Evra, and his defensive teammate Nemnja Vidic, with a view to assessing their worth.

It’s always interesting to read such stories about mangers or coaches going to games to watch players. With today’s technology and the available access to games from around the world on television, is it not possible that Inter Milan probably have a pretty good idea of the worth of Evra by viewing his performances over a season or two, rather than pick an arbitrary game wherein he may have a particularly good, or bad, game for a variety of reasons. All that said, the interest from Inter seems to reinforce the impression that Evra is in the final days of his United career.

Earlier in the season, it had been speculated that the full back may return to his native France to see out his career. With the top two clubs in Ligue 1, PSG and Monaco, thought to be interested, it seemed a logical step. Inter’s approach however may now have muddied the waters, and Evra may well have a choice to make
