Rio is susceptible to defensive lapses and when that happens, he can look like a fool.

But nobody is perfect, i can't name a single defender who has a spotless record day in day out. It is only a matter of how many off-days they have in a season.

Rio fits in well to the way United play which is so much better than the boring style of Chelsea and Liverpoo.

Rio not only defends well but has made crucial contributions in assists and goals which neither Carragher or Terry can boast about.

Every defender has some negative points in them , rio has a lapse in concentration at times, which can be crucial with opposition strikeforce like torres, drogba or anelka..but what he aint good at, he more than makes it up for his technical and teamwork ability in the game...so shush all you rio haters.

Sean, whats your problem with Rio Ferdinand carrying the ball? its a useful quality for a defender to have. The only reason people like carragher don't do it is because theyre not good enough. In fact the main article that is being referred to criticizes rio for not doing it enough. Footballs not just as simple as defenders having to defend and forwards having to stay up top.

Sean O'Neil: Total football is a fairly easy concept to understand, you don't have to swap positions, players should just be comfortable playing anywhere on the pitch. So if Rio sees a gap in the opponents defence on the flank he can push into it and someone else falls back into his defensive position without a notable drop in quality.
Carragher/Campbell on the other hand would get a nose bleed when crossing the half way line. Under Total Football players are footballers first and foremost, then strikers/defenders/midfielders.

[Karl]
"We don’t want him to stay back. We WANT our defenders to move forward. It’s actually as simple as that."

Good news for every other team in the league...

"you Manc’s are praising him for going out of position...He needs to stay back or stop calling himself a defender"

rio deserves more mention than what he gets and i think OH's criticism was uncalled for. it was the solid defense of last season lead by rio that helped man utd to the crown. he ma not be perfect but after all who is? i think his presence in the field as a leader aslo plays a big role!
