Borussia Dortmund CEO Hans-Joachim Watzke has confirmed that Ilkay Gundogan will leave the German club in the summer transfer window. Speaking to German media outlet Bild, Watzke said, “It is unquestionable that he will leave Borussia Dortmund this summer.”

“It was not our wish to see him leave but it was his wish. Then we said, ‘okay, then we will sell you and focus our plans differently. I am quite confident that there are multiple clubs who want him.”

Watzke’s comments will come as a huge boost for Arsenal and Manchester United who have been heavily linked with Gundogan over the past month for a summer transfer. Gundogan’s contract with Dortmund is set to expire at the end of next season and the 24 year old will not be short of potential suitors once the transfer window reopens this summer.

The 24 year old German would be a great signing for either of the Gunners and the Red Devils as both the sides need a deep lying midfielder who can help the team to build from the back. There were also some suggestions that Barcelona are also interested in the player but the Catalan side have been banned and can’t sign players before 2016.
