Hull want Campbell for 7m - should United sell?

Written by Ahmed Bilal

Hull chairman Paul Duffen on the club’s £7m bid for young Manchester United striker Frazier Campbell:

“We’ve put a £7m bid on the table to Manchester United.

The complexities of their situation are that it depends on them getting one in, that one might well be Bulgarian.

As I said all the way through the summer we need to be respectful of that and there’s nothing I can do to force the situation.

If they do bring someone in I want to be at the front of the queue and I will do whatever it takes to bring him to the football club.

They’ll be a lot of people alluding to the fact we’ve got carried away with ourselves. But I can absolutely guarantee that I’m here for the long term building the football club.

And we are going to have to get braver in some of the things we do but it will never be at the cost of threatening the security and financial ability of the club long term.”

Well I’m not going to argue with that - Campbell scored 15 goals in 7 months for Hull in the Championship - probably not an earth-shattering goalscoring record but from what we’ve seen of him so far there is potential in the boy to play at the Premier League level provided he gets some games under his belt.

Question is - is Campbell good enough to play for United or like Rossi, will Fergie sell him because there’s no space for the youngster in the squad?

Somehow I don’t see Campbell getting regular games up front ahead of, say, Ronaldo, even if United don’t get a certain Bulgarian in before midnight on Monday.

Thoughts?

  1. Sell off John Oshea and Gary N immediately and downgarde Giggs and Scholes to reserved team. All these palyers are old and lack of pace and could not compete with younger opponent. Cambell is better than John Oshea and is better to keep him in the squad.

  2. I can’t be the only one who thinks it odd that Fergie has been banging on about wanting four strikers on rotation like 1999 with the Cole/Yorke/Solskjaer/Sheringham quartet, but has let Saha go, is presumably entertaining the idea of selling Campbell, and hasn’t brought anyone in yet and continually says how pessimistic he is about getting his targets (i.e. Berbatov).

That leaves us with Rooney and Tevez, with no Ronaldo - he’s been effectively playing as a forward rather than a winger - for at least another month. Now I have no doubt that the ‘pessimism’ over Berbatov is a front and that it’s all but done, but when it’s said that we don’t have enough strikers, selling two and bringing in one doesn’t improve things on paper.

I just hope that if he does let Campbell go it’s either on loan or with a buyback clause in the event of Hull’s relegation or other offers to buy him, because he’s a promising player.

  3. WHAT is campbell worth 7 illon think of what you could by with that is campbell up to premiership standerd ???
