How can Wenger improve Arsenal?

Mid transfer window, what could/should your team do to improve?

Already we are over midway through the January transfer market and despite this being the priciest ever window on record (an estimated £96M spent already) much of the pre-window speculation has failed to materialise (Berbatov to United anyone?).

Of course the media will do their utmost to recycle last summers rubbish or invent some audacious move. The likelihood is though many of the reports will go unsubstantiated.

As an Arsenal supporter I’m used to the window passing by with the minority of commotion, the exception being Reyes a few years ago. Its Wenger’s policy and us Gooners all trust Wenger don’t we….?

Far from this being a slight on Le Prof, I struggle to see how we can be in a position to win the league come the end of May without some valuable reinforcements.

Defensively we are in a bit of a predicament right now – with Toure at the African Nations Cup and Gallas far from Mr Reliable injuries wise, a centre back or two wouldn’t go amiss.

Wenger’s youth policy has no doubt been a roaring success with the Arsenal playing some of the most sublime football around and now getting results with it. However there is a time when experience has to come to the fore and as many a Man Utd supporter would tell you, if there is a time for bottle its now.

And that is something I don’t see in Senderos and Djorou, not yet anyway. This is our best chance in 3 years to win the title and the excuse that we are a young team doesn’t really cut the mustard anymore.

Names I wouldn’t mind donning our colours, be it permanently or on loan include Aston Villa’s Olof Mellberg and Boro’s Jonathan Woodgate. Mellberg is out of contract in the summer and so can be bought in on the cheap and has a wealth of experience at centre and right back. As for Woodgate, he hasn’t had the best luck with injuries but he is a very capable defender and a loan deal to prove he could stay fit would be just the ticket. He is reputedly unsettled on Teeside and would jump at the chance to play for a big club – hence why he probably won’t join Spurs as speculated! 

These guys could do a job coming in to the side if need be and provide us with some of the defensive rigidity lacking on occasions this season.

Offensively we have been absolutely fantastic. The goals have been flowing, as opposed to the penalty box passing sessions that were so frequent last season and the way we have put teams to the sword has been as pleasing as any other season I remember. The downside is again not who is in the first eleven but who comes in when the going gets really tough, come March onwards.

Big plusses this season come in the form of Adebayor who, has confounded his critics this year, currently second in the goal scoring charts to a certain winker and, Eduardo, despite a slow start is beginning to become that ‘fox in the box’ Wenger has so yearned for (to the extent Franny Jeffers was worth a punt!).

Fabregas and Hleb can also be regarded in that category, the young Spaniard becoming our driving force in Thierry’s departure and Hleb now adding the final product his deft dribbling skills deserve.

Unfortunately for Robin Van Persie and to a lesser extent Tomas Rosicky, their seasons haven’t really taken off. To be fair, its only because of injury but its hard to rely on RVP right now – he seems to be in one week, out the next 3. We know what he can do but he’s not often doing it right now.

2 years since Theo Walcott’s £12M move from Southampton and we’re still waiting. Still waiting for a prolonged run in the side, still waiting for a real boom in form, still waiting to see that promise turn into performance. Its been rumoured this week that he will be allowed out on loan, with Stoke and Liverpool alleged to be interested, though Wenger has slammed the door shut on that one. With only 17 squad members available right now and the games coming thick and fast, why deplete our numbers further? And where better to learn his football education than The Grove, under Wenger’s tutelage. It’ll come – he is only 18 after all – but you feel it needs to come soon, for his and Arsenal’s sake.

Its harder bringing players in in January as we are already in the middle of the season and performances are needed immediately – which doesn’t always happen.

I’d like to see Rafaael Van Der Vaart come in, to take some of the pressure off of Fabregas in that attacking midfield position, and also taking Van Persie’s place as a second striker.

Similarly, I think Luka Modric or Damien Duff would be great acquisitions – we need a natural winger and the Irishman is as good as any when in form, just ask Barca.

What do you all think with regards to who and what your team needs this transfer window?

And do you fellow Gooners agree with what I have said?

Remember these are just my ideas, take with a bucketful of salt.

You are spot on. The team needs some defensive reinforcements. While someone who brings experience is a requirement, someone to hold onto would be ideal. I could see the acquisition of Benfica captain, Luisao to be the best fit. He is a strong central defender who could push to start regularly. I also think going Dutch is key, landing VD Vaart is major, but Huntelaar would be quite the catch as well. As a proven goal scorer, I am surprised to not see Alexandre Frei’s name come up more in ALL the Newcastle, Man City, Middlesbrough striker debate. Why is this ? He seems to have been a staple for so many years with his National Side.

We need some decent wingers. Diaby and walcott are not ready yet (if ever). We would´ve been covered if only diarra had stayed but neither denilson or gilberto are good enough if Flamini or Cesc is out injured. So a winger and a tough-tackling DM would be ideal.

Don´t think we´ll buy anyone and least of all another central defender.

As an Arsenal season-ticket holder for home and away games i feel that your comments about bringing in a centre back as cover are spot on. Not so much to replace Toure or Gallas but as cover for when Kolo fucks off to the koon cup or when Gallas picks up an injury. Having seen them in the flesh in the past few games i feel that Senderos is a liability at centre back and would not trust him to clear up my washing up let alone a goal mouth scramble. Djourou i feel is bringing the form of a player who has been playing at a relegation club to the Arsenal back 4, which showed in the shit cup against the Yids! hense why he was taken off at half-time. So some fresh faces please Arsene. In attack i feel we are ok with goals coming from the toginator and eduardo now picking up some form, also with rvp to come back (whenever that is?) from injury i feel we will have one of the most feared front lines in the league. Post this mans comments to Arsene Wenger and let him see what the fans want. Altough i think you should leave out the bit about Mellburg! to much of a cart-horse for me. UTA

  6. Boom! Gunners!

I agree that we need things but Arsene wont buy shite. That is his only flaw, frugal to excess. It is one thing when your Dad saves every penny and wont buy Swordfish because the money is for retirement but what the hell is Arsene saving for? He needs to stop trying to just prove a point and start realizing that it doesn’t have to be youth only and no purchasing of experience. It doesn’t work that well to go all Galactico either so why would all youth work? That is what kills me about ManU is that they have youth and experience and look at them sitting above us on goal difference now.
Wingers, center defenders, we need them. Rosicky is always going to be an injury issue and Walcott may never grow up. Kolo just yanked out his groin in Africa and he was already gonna be gone for a bit. Gallas is not good enough to carry a weaker partner.

I want to stand behind every move of Le Manager but in this one area he seems to have the blinders on.

We just need a stable centre back.
And we need a left winger or at least a left midfield player.
We could try a cheeky bid for Sneijder or we could get Yoaan Gourcuff. He’s french, young and very talented to cover for Fabregas. ( Fabby is off form -.- )

at newcastle diaby was terrible! he held onto the ball for too long and as a consequence made a badd pass or ended up losing the ball. I think the performance of hoyte and senderos were encouraging. Therefore i dont think we need a major expensive centre back. Just sum1 who could provide extra cover just in case.
As for midfield we could do with a left winger as rosicky and diaby are not natural wingers who can deliver the killer cross that we need for Adebayor. Speaking of Adebayor, he was brilliant last night Oh, and i thought he got selfish two times in the match, but he scored at the end of both those instances. So its ok.

his chance for his hat trick.
I saw flashes of Henry which i didnt like.
Hope he dosent become a ball hog.

    Diaby just gotta be sold.

I believe the same as many others on here that we need cover at centre back and a left winger.
Kolo and gallas are good centre backs but senderos and djourou are not good enough cover for a team challenging for 3 major trophies.
In the left wing position rosicky’s got legs made of glass and diaby just cannot play there, he’s a centre mid nothing more nothing less and has no left foot, in this position i believe ricardo quaresma would be a good buy cause he can also play right, also if we bought him when rosicky is fit rosicky could cover all the other positions across the midfield

  11. Come on Arsene!

Ok from looking at everyone’s comments I see some valid points. However, considering how his squad is balanced, he does not need anyone at the back. If he does, someone will have to leave, maybe Hoyte. With Toure, hopefully recovered from his injury, Song and Eboue back in a couple of weeks. I doubt Wenger will buy another centre half. He needs to give Senderos some confidence, which may see him return to 2005 form (FA cup win year). I don’t disagree with the comments about Rosicky and Diaby, however I don’t think Arsene should change personnel just yet. I can see a perfect solution in the current squad, and that is move Theo Walcott to the left wing. Why? His best stuff has come from this position, e.g. first game at Emirates v Villa (goal assist) and cutting in from the left to score against Chelsea in the CC final last year. I do however believe it is time to get rid of Gilberto, his performances have cost us quite a bit this season. Just watch his contribution to Spurs goals last Tuesday. I believe he may wait to summer though and may get rid of Diaby and replace him with Vela. I’ve heard rumours about Andre Ayew and Yoan Gourcuff like the others. Just because its the transfer window doesen’t mean Arsene has to buy. If he does, players will need time to adapt, which could affect us in the next few months, so buying isn’t always the best policy. I also don’t think he’ll buy from the UK as players will be overpriced and they’ll know they may be a short term fix. Also Mellberg has been playin right back for a while and Woodgate will not want to play second fiddle to Gallas and Toure, so I see no point. I would be more worried for the team if he buys big in an attempt to improve us.

Hello again. Just got home from work and feel slightly chuffed at the prospect of another trip to “sold trafford” for what will hopefully turn out to be another great result for the arse up at the home of prawn sarnies (memories of league triumphs there come flooding back) On to the main topic of point and the view from the previous gooner leaves me somewhat confused. Theo on the wing? you sure? His best place in the side is going through the middle. He is wasted on the wing, yeah you have a good point that he has contributed abit from the wing but how often have we seen him run at full-backs and just run into them. It is not like they are world class full backs either. He struugled to get the better of Andy Griffin for fuck sake and that cunt is double his age! Glad we did not sign Woodgate,as i feel he would of only kept our bench warm until Kolo or Gallas picked up an injury (that is unless he was not nursing an injury himself) best off up the road sat next to King on the treatment table. Still feel we need some cover at the back though. Lets see what the next 3 days reveal. In Arsene we trust!

not sure if bringing in any attacking players will be the best thing for Arsenal at the moment. Arsenal have so many promising youngsters that it is hard to imagine a big new arrival at the Emirates. Any arsenal fan who watches spanish football will be counting down the days until the arrival of c.vela, the player who totally outplayed the supposedly good sergio ramos. Although i wouldn’t mind seeing ricardo quaresma wearing the red and white shirt.

    Going locally;

Steven Taylor as a backup defender ( he can play centre or fullback )

Stewart Downing on left midfield ( he can rotate with Rosicky ), playing with Hleb on the right.

If there is enough cash, we could splash on Gabriel Agbonlahor, who can also play right wing ( coz Eduardo’s gonna be out till Sep or later ), with only Adebayor and RVP as proven scorers.

    We outta spend this summer.
