Henry would rather move to Liverpool than to Tottenham, Newcastle United or Manchester City

Heard a rumour the other day that Thierry Henry might be moving away from Barcelona after just one season. Henry’s name may not be synonymous with loyalty for most fans but why would he pack up and leave so quickly when he’s taken so much time to get settled in?

And then I heard that he would be coming back to England. Not to Arsenal, because that story has ended, but perhaps to Chelsea or some other big club. But the rumours didn’t stop there. Now we’re hearing that Henry could move to another London club, namely Tottenham, to be close to his daughter. Not far behind are the rumours linking Henry to Newcastle United and Manchester City, the former getting over-excited whenever their club strings a couple of wins in a row and the later already dreaming about next season and that big big big signing that Shinawatra has promised them.

Speculation can be fun, but this one is absurd.

Why would Thierry Henry - a man who left a club he loved (Arsenal) to go play for a new club and rebooted his career at Barcelona for a shot at winning the Champions League - go to a club that has no real chance of winning it in the next couple of years?

If Henry’s career was ending, I’d understand. But the guy still has a couple of years at the top, and he desperately wants to win the Champions League and win more titles. He believed that he couldn’t do it at Arsenal (although ironically with him they still might be at the top of the table and in the semis based on the rest of the squad’s performances this season) so he jumped to Barcelona.

What makes anyone think that he will jump to Tottenham, Newcastle United or Manchester City? If you do the math, Henry has 3 years left at the top and for any of the three clubs mentioned above to snag him this summer, they’d need to convince him that they can reach the top four next season (or the year after that) and then actually go on and win the Champions League in the following season.

Manchester City are a class away from the top four and even massive investment will not make them equals in just 1 year, and even then they wouldn’t have the experience or the class to go on and win the CL. It’s a nice dream, but even top sides need considerable European experience before they can consider themselves as proper contenders.

Newcastle United - 3 wins and you have Champions League ambitions? Not to beat down on you but a) location and b) teams ahead of you make it quite unlikely for Henry to consider a move to Geordie-land. Maybe in a couple of years when he wants to retire and be loved and not criticised…

Tottenham - a club that has promised so much but failed to deliver when it counted the most (League Cup notwithstanding). Apparently the rumour-mongers forgot the Arsenal-Tottenham rivalry and also consider Henry a liar for saying that he loves Arsenal.

If we’re going by rumours alone, why not go with this one - Henry himself has said that the club he’s like to play for in England after Arsenal was Liverpool.

And with Liverpool doing so well in the Champions League year in and year out, why not bring Henry in to play alongside Torres and turn Liverpool into genuine Premier League title contenders?

Henry to Liverpool has more of a chance of happening than the chances of Tottenham, Manchester City or Newcastle United breaking in to the top four next season.

  1. Spuds?

    Held in contempt by Henry.
The local neighbour of his beloved Arsenal.
    Salary Cap.
    Bottom half of the table.
2 decent seasons ever in the PL, neither as high as the likes of Ipswich or Norwich have managed.

If you want to mock a team linked, at least to the obvious.

I wonder which team you support.

  2. the grammar is absolutely to poor…

    “If you do the match”
“to Chelsea or something big club”

also this article to pointless any one who know’s anything about football could work this out. It seems to manor you write in caters for either the slow minded or the young minded.

it seems this was just an opportunity to embrace Henry & Liverpool, and mock Newcastle, Man City, & Spurs.
I thought journalists which I’m sure you would call yourself, are supposed to be unbiased, I’m 18 years old and i could do a much better job.
I’m a Tottenham fan, and I’m sick of the constant digs and dibes we get for winning the Carling Cup, I’ve never retaliated because I was happy that we won the trophy after a poor season, it’s a domestic trophy therefore its worth winning, it gives a club a door into Europe. It’s silver wear.
But its just funny how this topic was about Henry, yet it differed to ‘examples’ such as the Carling Cup.

  3. Surely Henry would want to go to a team capable of challenging for the title?

  4. 09/04/2008 Rui Coster

i just love all of Arsenals great young stars and all the fans are just amazing……..DONT WIN MUCH THO DO YOU MUGS????

send any unwanted silver polish up to the lane please Arsenal you wont be needing it again this year!!

    Arsene knows eh?????

  5. If this guy’s a journalist I’m the Queen Mother.

  6. We don’t want him at the lane anyway!

  7. Isn’t it funny, when the spuds win the worthless cup, that their fans all of a sudden start thinking that they’re AC Milan……

  8. You are a lucky guy, mate! Not only have you managed to blag a spot writing about football, with the literacy skills of a 9 year old, you appear to have a remarkable insight into just what makes Thierry Henry tick.

When did Mr Henry divulge all this information to you, or are you just basing this article on ‘what you reckon’ because you must’ve read loads of other stuff about him, eh?

I liken you to Charlie from Big Brother who, when told about her cousin Keiran Richardson’s potential transfer to Sunderland, famously commented ‘Who?! Sunderland?! I’ve nevva ‘eard of ‘em. Nah ‘ee’ll nevva go to a crap club like that!’

  9. Its a transfer rumour (key word RUMOUR) - Henry wont come to Spurs and to be honest based on his performances this year he wouldnt strengthen the team. Gooners we understand a trophyless season is frustrating we have had plenty of them, but lets not create stories to write pathetic jibes. It be like me writing a response completely unrelated to the Carling Cup Semi when we thrashed what was a strong Arsenal side and then mentioning it - oops

  10. jon - where has anyone said we are like AC Milan. you come out with more bull then the writer of this story.
The worthless cup as you call it, is better and more then what your gonna win this year again.

we have never once said we wanted henry so that already proves how silly this is. maybe you should talk about why you cant win anything. the only good thing your players and your manger can do is get into the top 4.

  11. Kyle, how’s things? Sorry if my grammer isn’t to your liking but then again I pick things out of my nose that I find more interesting than i’d imagine you’d be! You sound like a young immature little fool and to highlight someones spelling or grammer is absolutetly pathetic but seen as you brought it up, there’s quite a few errors in your own post. I won’t bother pointing them out to you as I actually have a life but maybe when you’ve finished your homework you could ask your Mammy to give you a hand (assuming she’s clever enough for you!)

On the subject of Spurs, hard luck for not having won anything of any importance for several decades. Congrats on your recent Cup success, what an amazing achievement! I’m sure it’ll be remembered for many years as one of finest moments in sporting history!!! In fact i’d rank it up there with Jesus turning water into wine or putting a man on the moon!! Truely historic stuff……….

  12. kyle - thanks for the corrections - I wrote this without rechecking it and props to you for finding the errors.

just stating the facts guys, I’m basing this on what Henry / Wenger themselves have said around Henry’s departure from Arsenal.

And if you’re smart enough to figure this out, then props to you. Bunch of people online will read the dross coming up on other sites claiming that Henry is moving to Tottenham / Newcastle and will be bitterly disappointed come summertime.

Oli: Richardson wasn’t Champions League material to begin with, despite his promise. Henry still is.

No sideways jibe at the Cup, it was well-earned and well-deserved. Using it as a means to justify your candidacy for the ‘5th best team in England’ is a bit rich though. Potential isn’t everything.

The Liverpool link seemed to tie up the story nicely, which is why I mentioned it. Rafa won’t go for Henry tbh, Liverpool need wingers more than they need forwards.

  13. Sam, I thought the article was quite fun… certainly raised a few eye brows and prompted a response. Not sure about that t*t bijaz mamooz blaming your grammar (do we care) on the fact you’re from Pakistan… Racial !

    But…

Why ever couldn’t Man City or Newcastle break into the top 4 or 5 Everton nearly did this year… I remember when Arsenal were a rather mediocre Premiership team not so long ago and will be the first to admit that they have played their way into the top four impressively so under the guidance of Wenger. It wasn’t all that long ago that Keegan oh so nearly won the title for the Toon. The premiership is an awesome league, if players like Owen go to Newcastle, Elano to Man City, Djorkaeff to Bolton the list goes on…. Then I’m sure over the next 2/3 years the top end of the league can be shaken up, and a player like Henry to Man city or Newcastle could be the catalyst for that… would he gamble on it??? I reckon a few extra grand a week could well change his mind… money talks kids.

    James.

  14. James - it’s a time issue. I’m sure Spurs / City / Newcastle will get there, but will they get there in 2-3 years?

Henry has 3 years left at the top level, he wants to win the Champions League, why would he take a risk with a side outside the top 4 when he didnt want to take a risk with a side in the top 4 (Arsenal)?

If he moves to any of these 3 clubs (or to the MLS, as some have suggested), I’d be very surprised.

  15. I’m talking about this summer, of course. In the future he might move. And if Barca win the Champions League this season, then yea, that would change things.

  16. 09/04/2008 We want Ledley at the back

Quite frankly we would not want Henry at the Lane. Firstly all players who leave Arsenal are never the same ie Viera, Petit, Anelka, Overmars, Edu etc etc. Secondly hes too arrogant and would not fit into the team and thirdly we have a better striker in Berbatov, and I couldnt see them 2 playing together.

  17. Sam… what are you talking about?

Your grammar, why are you getting involved?
    “Written by Ahmed Bilal.”

Ha, the genius that radiates from what you write is too much for such a little boy such as me. ‘Mammy’ Ha (because babies can’t say, “Mummy” right?) dear me, if i only had half of the brains you have!

Any way, getting away from the fact that you seem it be a sporting, religious, and comedic form of einstein, LETS talk about you.
I pointed out the grammar simply because…. this is on view to the public, and as stated before, the writer would claim to be a journalist, furthermore grammar is essential.. but what do I know, as my mum is a retard, i have the speech ability of a 3 year old, and I’m a spurs fan who is clouded in the illusion that the Carling Cup winner is the equivalent to the Champions League.
What an ‘immature little boy’ I truly truly am!

I fine though, thanks for asking!
I really like the way you ask me how i am, like to confuse you that your going to be nice! God, I almost fell for it, luckily i didn’t get my mother’s genes ay!

    but seriously… I’m immature?
Im 18 years old, stereotypically, when the younger generation are backed into a corner of an argument with no material to counter the subject, ‘we’ resort into insulting one’s mother http://www.bbc.co.uk/dna/606/F9608508?thread=5209034

    Hmmm… i didn’t see me doing that.
So maybe you should stop and think before you write because you have just embarrassed yourself, as a immature little girl.

  18. I think it’s “an immature little girl” - sorry couldn’t resist

  19. touche

  20. sam,

leave kyle alone.he sounds like he has his head screwed on. As for ur remarks concerning spurs and the carling cup……u really need to wake up. its a trophy! a TROPHY!! are u going to have any this year? probably not. so why devalue any trophy when u are unlikely to win anything? sounds a bit stupid to me. Who won this trophy last year? oh thats right chelsea…..and before that…..oh yeah man utd. so i dont think anyone else see’s it as insignificant. there are 4 big teams in england and 3 domestic cups…….u do the math einstein

  21. Oh and note i didnt mention the champions league….cause u have never won it….and u never will. dont u just love swedish refs ;)

  22. Henry!?…dont make me laugh…Spurs would not want that twat.
The bloke is well past his best and his career is going down hill.
He hates spurs and spurs hates him…we are only looking for the future talent…spawny Henry is a has-been

  23. Its a god damn great trophy and the only 1 we’ll win for a decade so get off our backs. I think Thierry would be more than happy helping us try to defend our crown as we’re one of the big 5.

  24. Hold on here man city are actually going to be in europe next season through the fairplay league so why would he not want to come with a world class manager a multi-billionaire of an owner big things are happening at cit, I can gurantee you the football world will be stunned on how man city will behave in the transfer market, I’m afraid now Man City mean business!

CTID SVENS BLUE EYED ARMY DR. FRANK

  25. 09/04/2008 koppite

Why do so many arsenal fans feel the need to belittle the carling cup on the sole basis that it was conquered by their biggest rivals? I’m sure if they had gone on to win it this year you would have heard many a dumb cockney down the pub screeching:

“yes bled, you remember that time we won the carling cup when we beat the spuds in the semi’s bled?”

    “innit bled that was sick”

    “safe bled, for real”

    … you get my point.

  26. You have to remember that the guy is 30 years old, he has 3-4 years left max and at 15 million thats not the buy of the century people…

  27. Think you’ll find the reason arse fans belittle the carling cup is because Spurs fans are trying to make out their achievement of winning the CCup and finishin mid table is somehow superior to finishin top four and making sure of champs league football. Think if you ask any of the top four if they would prefer a trophiless season but top four fin or the carling cup they’d give you the same answer well done any how.

  28. 09/04/2008 Liverpoo_Fan

I’d welcome Henry but unfotunately Liverpool are now playing 1 up front and will be selling two strikers and bringing up our new young sensation Nemeth into the side. Remember his name you’ll be seeing a lot of this kid in the future

  29. 09/04/2008 koppite

    Bled,

Thanks for stating the obvious, I appreciate you clearing that up for me! Cast your eyes back to the start of the season when Spurs we’re looking good for the drop on their form. Then in comes a new manager, a new regime, a solid mid table finish, some excellent january transfers, and to top it off, a trophy, which is going to be one more than any arsenal fan has seen in the last four years. Maybe for you demanding Arsenal fans it’s a shocker of a season, and of course a Spurs fan would sooner be entertaining the likes of Barca and AC at the lane next season after a top 4 finish, but if we’re being realistic, that was never going to happen this season was it?

Jealousy is never flattering, and however much it would pain me to say so, if Liverpool struck out in every single competition for 4 successive seasons and Everton wrangled some silverware somehow, when an Evertonion got on my back about this statistic I would simply have to say fair play and well done. Whilst obviously not the view of a lot of Liverpool fans, I can’t remember ever hearing an Arsenal fan admit defeat.

You got a hiding in the the Carling Cup semis by Spurs and you got a hiding in the quarters of the Champions League last night, both times by a far more organised, determined, and passionate outfit. The sooner you realise that Arsene Whinger and the cry baby Gallas are murdering you from the inside out, the sooner you can go on and emulate the success of your bitter rivals over the last few years.

    Innit!

  30. Most certainly don’t want Henry at Spurs - the last season he played for Arsenal he just didn’t want to know. Don’t want spoilt kids at Spurs, thank you very much

  31. If you think Henry going to Spurs is funny, check this one out…

I’ve heard rumors that he’s coming to America to join the new Seattle MLS team.

    Come on you Sounders???

  32. Henry/Torres up front….. mmmmm

  33. 09/04/2008 TERRY , DUBLIN

I WOULD LOVE TO SEE HEBRY GO TO SPURS FOR 1 JUST TO ANNOY ARSENAL SUPPORTERS BUT YOU KNOW IT AINT GOINT TO HAPPEN. I AGREE 100% WITH THE ARTICLE
    .

  34. 10/04/2008 Liverpoo_Fan

Torres is the best striker in the world full stop —>.

  35. 11/04/2008 Liverpool_malaysia
