Why Heinze leaving Manchester United for Real Madrid makes sense

Written by Mohammed Khanani

Gabriel Heinze - Manchester United

With continuous speculation about Heinze moving to Real Madrid (or even Barcelona) the question has come up, will he move ?

The answer has to be yes.

At Manchester United Gabriel Heinze has to fight off the competition of experienced players like Patrice Evra and Mikael Silvestre, both of whom have signed long-term contracts at Manchester United earlier this season. He has been constantly linked with a move away from Manchester United this season, and tellingly, there have been no formal comments on his ‘lack of availability’ from Manchester United.

On the other hand, Real Madrid have lost Roberto Carlos to Fenerbahce and Marcelo is expected to go out on loan to Espanyol. This leaves one choice for left back which is Miguel Torres who is quite inexperienced. This will give Heinze (or any other left-back coming into Real Madrid) first preference for the left back role as he is experienced.

Real Madrid’s interest is certain, and until the transfer season ends (and probably after that), Heinze will continually be linked with a move away from Manchester United (most popular targets are Real Madrid and Juventus).

Man Utd may not have signed Gareth Bale, but they have already indicated that Pique and Evans will get games next season, making it almost certain that 1-2 defenders will be leaving this summer.

Will Heinze be one of them?

Makes sense. Real Madrid are obviously going to be in the market for a left back this summer and with the competition at Man Utd, they could see Heinze as an ideal replacement for Carlos.

  2. mabey one other reason that uniyed didnt move for bale other than alreaby havin plenty of cover for the left back poistion is that supposedly we have brazilian twins coming either this summer or next who apperantly have the ability 2 b the next cafu n carlos

  3. the brazilian twins are coming in 2008, one’s right back and the other’s left back - more here.

Wouldn’t bet the future on them though - not yet.

  4. would u of bet the future on gareth bale

  5. No, the Brazilin twins are arriving in July of this year when they turn 18.

  6. bws - heh, yes I would have.

    benny - I thought they were 15 in 2005, so…

Although if I remember my FM, I think they come in 2007-2008.

    Oh well.

    Mohammed Khanani:

The only reason Real Madrid is looking at Heinze is because they do not want to stun the growth and development of Marcelo and Torres by acquiring fairly “young” players like Chivu or Abidal who would be a long term investment.

Miguel Torres being the number one choice RB ahead of Cicinho who i consider to be a better player then Heinze, only reflects on how talented Miguel Torres really is.

If Gabriel Heinze came, he would absolutely not be the first choice left back. He would be right behind Torres in the becking order.

I think that Real are truly spoilt at right back. Salgado I have always rated as in the top 3 right backs in the world (after all, Chelsea were desperate to sign him), and if he weren’t so petulant, he could be the best of all. Cicinho is quite extraordinary going forward, and Torres is very promising.

Please Real, sign Abidal and not Heinze!!

  9. Firstly, cicinho is pretty good going forward, i agree, but he’s pretty bad defending, salgado is 1. too old and 2. he never was that brilliant, im sure chelsea weren’t ‘desperate’ to sign him, they were just looking for a better right back than ferreira, which obviously isn’t saying much. And i have seen miguel torres play before, but if he is a right back as redondo says, then could heinze not play left back and torres play right? By the way heinze is a better defender than miguel torres, from what ive seen hes good, but not as good as heinze. If he was that good he would be in the spanish team by now, because del horno isn’t the best.

Salgado certainly was brilliant at times. Well at least I think so. True, he could have been a bit pacier, but he had tenacity and knew how to time a challenge. He was also good in the air, and a reasonable crosser. Torres - well he is young, he has only really been playing regularly this season, and so had little chance of replacing Del Horno. And Del Horno at Athletic was absolutely superb, I feel he was unfairly vilified at Chelsea.

The fact remains that Abidal is a far superior player to Heinze. The only domain in which I would rank Heinze as superior to Abidal would be in terms of attitude, which directly links to his tenacity.

  11. Yep welli agree about abidal, ive actually never properly watched him but hes aparently the best left back available, and really? del horno was that good? Oh for athletic bilbao, that is because he was one of their main players, is he still aas good for valencia? For spain he was rarely anything more than average this season, although i always quite liked him, i think he’s quite good. Nahh salgado was a bit like heinze, as he was so comitted in the challenge, and he was a good defender, but in the past few years he hasnt been the same as he used to be, and he was never a good crosser really, good at dribbling with it and pulling it back, but not at proper crosses.
But i think that abidal is better between the two, and i also think both abidal and heinze will be playing for either barcelona or real, one at each.

  12. Hugo for me the top right backs in late 90s early 00s have been 1Cafu 2Javier Zanetti (how is this spelled?) 3 G. Neville.
Even now I think that Lahm is way better playing rihgt back.Even Panucci is better than Salgado. There are always 3 better right backs than Salgado.
    hahahahahahahahahahahahaha
P.S. nie nie nie nie nie nie ha ha ha ha ha ha

  13. 11/06/2007 Hugo Steckelmacher

Cafu was always suspect defensively, and played in a totally different way to Salgado. Panucci is quite simply nowhere as good as Salgado. Lahm - well we’ll see, let’s wait for him to play at a consistently high level over a long period of time. By the way, full marks for maturity (rolls eyes).

  14. But do you really rate salgado as a top 3 right back?
Has he ever been something like that? You are a real fan but you no fun .ooooooooooooo. much much South Park.
OK another list for 3 very good RB in 06-07 season
    Micah Richards,G Neville, Daniel Alves.
    ooops Where is miechel Salgado?
And what a stupid name he’s got? lol
Even if Richards isn’t a very good right back but a center back Willy Sagnol is a much better then the strange name riht back

  15. 06-07 period 1 daniel alves 2 g neville 3 richards 4 willy sagnol where is salgado?
bench and recovering. no way R.Madrid class

  16. Hugo
on your mark get set -Salgado is jet set.
I’ve always been able to see- that miechel gets the forwards icy.
SALGADO IS FULL BACK- FOOL AND BACK (oh yeah)
miechel’s done it -ronaldo’s stopper on the pitch (oh yeah)
    gagaga

  17. that’s a true piece of dominating immaturity…I call it humour

  18. Hmm…

Always rated Salgado as a good right-back, but not as world-class.

Then again, I don’t rate Gary Neville as world-class either.

Both are very, very good though.

A bit pointless to compare players from different leagues? Oh wait, what am I saying :P

  19. 11/06/2007 chintan

Heinze shudn’t be allowed because then we’ll be dependent on evra & silvestre both of whom are prone to making mistakes.

  20. Ahmed I think that playing for Manchester for soooo many years says something abut him. If you don’t think G Neville is world class then name me a better one in the short history of the premierleague. He won his place in the team of the decade for premierleague and not many things have changed till then. And you know, premierleague is one of the very top leagues.
Only mediocre riht backs play in this stupid league?

  21. 11/06/2007 Hugo Steckelmacher

Nikos you seem to be quite impetuous. I’m sorry that I can’t be at your beck and call in order to reply to your disingenuous jibes, I do other things than check Soccerlens all day.

Salgado has been injured, that’s why he doesn’t appear on your list. You absolute buffoon.

And Richards in the top right backs in the world? Not yet.

And as for stupid names - well Micah Richards and Willy Sagnol have far more ridiculous names, it doesn’t appear to affect them out on the pitch. Again, you are a buffoon.

  22. Hugo - you DON’T? You fkn traitor! :) But of course, you’re a COS fan as well…

btw, if you’re losing it at nikos, how will you blog? The world is full of buffoons mate, nikos’ is just havin some fun :)

  23. Thanks Ahmed.
Hugo if you checked it I wrote it in comment 15 .Well I think I AM THE GLORIOUS moohoo moohoo hoo hoo hoo.Maybe you can name better players you ve seen this year than Richards. And Willy is a greater name than Miechel. It suits to mammalians such as the whales.Have you ever seen any animal , even a fish, called Miechel? But Willy shows true class (the mammalians).
Don’t be arrogant, you may have a very good right back in your team but he’s not got a class name! :)

  24. 11/06/2007 Hugo Steckelmacher

His name is not Miechel! It is Michel, which is a latinized form of Michael. So it’s an extremely normal name.

Ok, better players than Richards this season:

Chimbonda (when not played at left-back :S), Eboue, Finnan, Yobo. That’s four from the premiership. Of course, Richards has the disadvantage of playing for Manchester City.

According to the logic of your comment 15, being injured means that you are not of sufficient class to represent your team. I’ll let that speak for itself.

Ahmed - when I write the articles, I am less aggressive. But when I am merely commenting, I have every right to be as challenging as other commentators, especially when thesaid commentator is extraordinarily pigheaded. No es así?

  25. 11/06/2007 Hugo Steckelmacher

And actually all I do all day is check Soccerlens :-) sorry for the blasphemy…

  26. When you tell me a palyer “is” top class and not “was” you mean he still “is”.A player who is on the bench can just be on the bench!!!naf sed. It’s easy for you to call Finnan but I rarely judje pools’ players. Also, I think Eboue (the offside trap killer) was ridiculous (more than you) , Chimbonda is just a runner and Yobo , too.Finnan maybe yes he was very good ,even in his crosses, but anyway Salgado as you can see he was nowhere.Whatever the reason , he will never be top right back. Give me the reasons why he is top class and if you tell me again that he is good defender then it’s your very own -mental- problem. If you are about to write something, you have to recheck your statements.Recall what you ve said ,cause ,eitherwise YOU mentioned FINNAN. Has Salgado ever been close to this form?

  27. and you have no sense of humour…that with the names is just humour , the incorrect spelling , the no (animal) class but I can see we have communication breakdown…it’s always the same ;)

  28. although I think that it’s Michel! and it really is Michel what a sissy!

  29. 1. his class http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wLztKXvKb5Q
    2. his name http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z1a4PAA72G8
It’s Michel and see what a class he ’s got in the first video where RM’s defence is just goofy.

  30. haha - playtime’s over folks, michel salgado is a good right-back, move along now :)

  31. The brazilian twins are coming in 2008. I jus think real madrid want to lure cristiano ronaldo to the bernebau and they are fully aware that he is friends with gabby heinze. it makes sense to me also as that we will recieve a lot of money selling him rather then silvestre as i doubt a man of heinzes talents would want to be a squad player. Pique and evans are coming through and even anderson has said he prefers playing at left back to central midfield so in emergency he can fill that void

  32. Ok no one around…

Well at one point Salgado was pitting with Puyol for a slot in the national team…
I rate him to be equal on the right as Heinze is on the left..

These two are class player who on their day can walk into any team…

That is an attestment to their abilities in PES…
    Ahahahahahaaaaaa…

  33. 27/07/2007 jaluo manutd

bilal yo wrong in saying neville is not world class..jus because he hasnt attained celebrity status in football doesnt make him average..his name may not appear in the hu iz hu of football but trust me the guy sure knows wat he daz and he daz it perfectly well
