Brilliant article. I have to agree a bit with Harry, but what you say makes perfect sense.

Agreed with Harry - escapism is a good way to describe it.

LF - thanks for the support mate, even though it's more like thousands of miles away.

Great article Conor, hope to see you again here. Doubt that you'll find much support for the idea of 'respecting the opposition' especially when the media knows there is so much more money to be made in creating divisions.

Disagree with foreign support issue. I was born in pompey moved to Liverpool when I was 3 so I would classify myself as a local boy, I hate it when people slag foreign fans there's nothing wrong with supporting a club 400 miles away from were you live.

Ahmed had done a post on football media to which I'd commented on june 3rd saying all footie fans are idiots. His reasons were very very different yet, my defense is the same. Football is not a living for most fans. It is escapist. For you sir, it is a living. Objectivity and open mindedness are something you HAVE to have. When it comes to fans, sure we're probably idiots for saying and doing some of the things we do and say but it doesnt make us any worse for it. The point is, as someone from India, who's love for Arsenal is a logical decision rather than an emotional one based on locale, I can make myself very objectively say 'hmm, fergie did do alright.' But for the vast majority of fans who support emotionally and passionately, because they're scousers or yids or catalans, it's a manner of escaping your everyday life. So instead of nitpicking and criticising blind loyalty, in an age where everything is so impersonal, and problems like depresion are a matter of 'diagnosis' and not basic human care, I think a little bit of respect ought to be shelled out to those who love for love and support for support.
I draw the line at harming each other, naturally but blind love is hard to find nowdays.

"You really hardly know where to begin with this, do you? If nothing else I would think that Liverpool and pretty much every other club in England would love to replicate the Arsenal youth system. But that's not why I bring this email to light; it's indicative of a state of mind."

You seem like a fairly informed fan so maybe you will know that Benitez said last year he'd love to have a system like the Arsenal youth. Liverpool's reserves have just recently won the treble so I do think thats a bad example of Arsenal being superior. Although I am one who is a big fan of what Arsene Wenger does.

"It is only banter". we are passionate for our teams and cannot have an FULLY honest view on anything in football. I'm not saying that if you don't hate United, Chelsea, Arsenal and Everton you are not a proper fan but I choose to believe there is nothing wrong with embracing footballing rivalries so long its just harmless banter and doesn't lead to vilance.
