Top banana!

Good on him i say. The experience will do him(and his family) the world of good. A few of England's other promising youngsters could do with reading this article!

The premiership will still be here when or if he's had enough in Greece. Meanwhile he's gaining valuable life experience, while at the same time educating himself and enjoying a better standard of living... Hmm, Blackburn or Greece? No brainer!

hell yeah !! Matt Derbyshire scored 2 Goals in the greek cup final against AEK and gave the chance to olympiakos to win the trophy

here are the goals http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l56pvI2J_U4

. Olympiakos seriously considers or to extend his loan or to buy his half rights ( this is unlikely in british teams ).One is for sure Matt went into olympiakos Hearts once and for good and wen a player does this in olympiakos fans he hove more chances to stay here ( i am in greece ).The press is verry exciting for his effort so far and the coach Ernesto Valverde too. He has made in only 95 days the people and the press here in greece to talk about a great talent here in greece . Good contact with the net , good heading ability his playing matches better to technical football although his light weight he is a strong player and i and all the fans of olympiakos . Thanks Blacburn Rovers for letting that player came to Olympiakos :)

Very nice article and very well informed...

I have to say that Matt is very talented and people at Piraeus will start going mental about him next season (I hope he stays, Olympiakos is trying to buy him from Rovers).

Thumps up for the previous post!!!(DanCav Rishton)

From an Olympiakos fan.

Good article.

Well done Matt, good luck too you lad! Hope you enjoy greek easter an stay there for at least another full season

Although I am a Rovers fan and live down the road where Matt grew up, I also have also supported Olympiakos, having holidaying on the island of Poros, just 1 hour by hydrofoil from Piraeus. I have seen the Karaiskakis Stadium in its old, developing and new red stadium and even taken a picture from a metro train!lol Search for 'olypiakos poros' in google and you will see.

I hope Matt gets a true sample of Greek life and hope he has a great easter weekend there too! Nothing like a Greek Easter...Hope you get yourself to Poros and Hydra Matty!!

Derbyshire's story is interesting, and it should take heart from the fact that Owen Hargreaves, an England international and once voted player of the season (06-07 or 05-06 I think), was immersed in foreign football even before stepping onto Manchester United's pitch. By playing for perennial German title contenders Bayern Munich, he gained the experience of competing for three titles at the highest level possible. Hargo went on to win numerous Bundesliga titles, German cups and even a Champions League trophy. Derbyshire's venture to Greece should prove pivotal to younger English players. Foreign experience can build domestic success once the player returns.

Do you think that the lower leagues have a high enough standard of football (technical) to allow player development?

Interesting points made, however it is worth mentioning that our lower leagues have provided a viable and successful opportunity for player development, Beckham to PNE and more recently Bentner to Birmingham.

Whilst I would also like to see more English players move overseas we should not dismiss the lower leagues as a worthwhile option.
