Has Benitez ruined Ryan Babel?
Holland coach Marco Van Basten recently criticised Rafael Benitez’s handling of Ryan Babel, noting that the player had taken a step backward since his arrival at Anfield. A harsh assessment? Not if you look at the facts; and having examined the facts, Benitez’s truly appalling treatment of the player is depressingly clear.
Van Basten argued: “If you look at Ryan Babel, it is a mortal sin he now sits on the bench at Liverpool. He was playing well in Holland and for the Under-21s but now he has taken a step backwards.”
Babel cost £11.5m and inarguably has huge potential – the question is has he been given the chance to fulfil that potential?
The answer is resoundingly and unequivocally NO.
As we’ve all seen, Rafa loves his facts, so let’s consider some facts about Ryan Babel:
2007-08: Babel’s first season
50 appearances
Starts – 29
Subbed – 21 times
On the bench – 24 times
Unused sub – 4 games
Totals
Subbed or on the bench in 82% of games
Subbed in 72% of games started
Scored 11 goals. On 10 occasions, dropped to the bench for the next game.
2008-09
38 appearances
Starts – 9
Subbed – 4 times
On the bench – 25 times
Unused sub – 6 times
Subbed or benched in 76% of games
Subbed in 44% of games started
GRAND TOTALS
88 appearances
38 Starts
Subbed – 25 times
On the bench – 49 times
Unused sub – 10 times
Subbed or on the bench in 84% of games
Subbed in 66% of starts
Taking into account unused sub status
In the squad 93 times
Subbed or on the bench in 90% games
With these figures in mind, consider the following questions:
1. Has Babel been given any kind of chance to establish himself at Liverpool?
2. Has he been allowed to flourish in any way?
3. Has he been allowed a consistent run of games *ever*?
4. Given the fact that in his first season, he was dropped to the bench TEN TIMES after scoring goals, has he been treated fairly in this respect?
5. Is there any justification for such treatment of the player?
The most important question for me is this: Do we want players to be treated this way at Liverpool FC?
The answer has to be no, yet some pigheaded fans just refuse to accept the truth that Rafa’s treatment of certain players over the years has been simply inexcusable.
Fans often seem to criticise Babel for his alleged lack of drive during his sporadic appearances, but how would you react when your manager has damaged your career, never given you a fair chance and made it abundantly clear that he has no faith in you?
Robbie Keane is another example of a player Benitez has treated in a similarly inexcusable manner: Keane was subbed or on the bench in 28 of his 33 appearances, which equates to 85% of games.
I’ve heard countless fans come up with the same ridiculous arguments: ‘Keane missed a few sitters so he deserved to be on the bench’; or ‘Keane did nothing when he was on the pitch’.
What a load of cretinous drivel.
For some reason, the ‘Rafa can do no wrong’ brigade are unwilling to accept that it is practically impossible for a player to get into any kind of rhythm/build understanding with team-mates/build confidence etc when subjected to the kind of treatment meted out to Keane, Babel, and before them, Peter Crouch.
Another pertinent point to consider: With Keane and Babel, Benitez has totally wasted over £30m of the club’s money.
£30m!
And that’s not including salaries.
I have absolutely no doubt that if allowed to actually play consistently, both Keane and Babel could have been very effective players for the club. Instead, Benitez has subjected them both to career damaging periods of endless inactivity, for which there is no excuse.
This kind of treatment is one of the principal reasons I am not a fan of Benitez and his way of doing things. Treating players with such contempt (which is what it basically amounts to), does not fit with the philosophy of the club and – IMO – is not behaviour befitting a manager of Liverpool FC.
Fans might not care about the likes of Keane and Babel, but just watch them change their tune when one of their favourites starts suffering from the Benitez effect.
If Ryan Babel wants to save his career and actually progress as a player, he has only one option: leave Liverpool and go to a club where he will treated fairly and given a consistent chance to prove himself.
For any player, leaving Liverpool can only be a step down, but Benitez has made it unambiguously clear that he is NEVER going to give Babel a proper chance.
To stay at the club under the Benitez regime would be career suicide.

Ryan Babel has ruined Ryan Babel.
If he ever looked bothered, didn’t wimp out of challenges and actually decided he wanted to be a footballer instead of ‘Rio’ (or whatever alter ego he calls himself) he’d be a decent player.
Cheers for the Man U goal lad, but don’t let the door hit your arse on the way out.
April 21st, 2009 @ 10:51ya agreed sometimes some bosses just do what they like…if they happen to be succesful then people think its ok…but to honest if you were the player u’d feel hard done by…Nic Anelka,Crouch & Keane were prime example…and now we wonder why Kuyt get a decent run in the side when he does not do what he is supposed to do…
April 21st, 2009 @ 10:49he he – clearly not a fan of Rafa – I dont have rose tinted specs just love my club..
April 21st, 2009 @ 10:55If a player is good enough, he will play, if he’s attitude is right, he will get more opportunitys, If he’s will to win is there for all to see, he will always get a go.
For all any of us know – Ryans head might not be in the right place, he’s attitude may be too layed back, after scoring a goal he might think he’s bigger than Jesus. We dont know what goes on behind the scenes so this article made me giggle like a girl…
Heres a quick question……..If a new manager came in and did exactly the same would you then write such an article about them??????
What if Ryan goes to another club and doesnt quiet make it – any chance of an article to apologise??
While I agree with the assessment of Keane, I cannot with Babels. I will say he has been consistent every time he gets on the pitch. I wince everytime he touches the ball because I know there’s a good chance he’s going to give the ball away too easily. You have to earn a run of games in the Premiership, they don’t just hand them out. The few flashes of talent Babel shows are heavily outweighed by the liabilities he brings. As a Liverpool man, I will be happy if he turns it around, but he has to do it when he gets the chance, no matter how small. And he simply doesn’t as of yet. I would say his chances are running slim.
April 21st, 2009 @ 11:09First things first, I am a BIG Ryan Babel Fan.
However we play 4-2-3-1 and play our best football with Gerrard supporting Torres, We didnt need Robbie Keane as we dont play 4-4-2 end of! Was clearly a Parry buy to soften the blow of not buying Barry from Villa. At least rafa had balls to get rid of players quickly. Crouch wanted to leave to play every week, and as playing 1 up front crouchy was NEVER gonna displace Torres. Question is who do you drop for ryan babel?? He should stop his moaning, pull his socks up and prove he is worthy of getting more playing time. Take a leaf out of Yossi’s book, he’s kept his head down and earned more playing time through hard work when he’s on the pitch. What has Babel done this season for Rafa to start him more often, Nothing! He sulks, 1st touch dreadful and doesnt work hard enough when the opposition has the ball.
I desperately want Ryan Babel to succeed, i think he should have nailed down the right wing and it’s there for the taking but he needs to improve and quickly
April 21st, 2009 @ 11:17He went to play for Holland at the Olympics, against Rafa’s advice. He showed where his loyalties were and has paid a harsh price. If he wants to go sell him on, out of the Prem, spain would suit his style of play.
April 21st, 2009 @ 22:58I agree with Van Basten’s statement. My question is why didn’t we ever read an article like this when Wright-Phillips was wasting away at Chelsea under Mourinho?
April 22nd, 2009 @ 00:15@Oranje there were plenty of articles bemoaning the wastage of SWP at Chelsea.
April 22nd, 2009 @ 02:54Well I missed them unfortunately. I do hope they were broke down as this writer has done. All I ever heard about SWP is that it was his fault for going there, that he should have known what he was getting himself into. The same could be said here abot Babel if that were true, but I personally don’t accept that stance.
April 22nd, 2009 @ 03:12@Oranje – fair point on that.
April 22nd, 2009 @ 03:36This is article is blatently another of the many swipes from other fans against rafa benitez. Ryan babel hasn’t played many games simply because he just hasn’t matured yet. I mean look at Nani at manchester united: all the potential to be the next Cristiano Ronaldo, thats why they forked out a massive £14.5 million pounds, even more than Babel, and yet they have both one thing massively in common. They have no idea what so ever how to pass a ball! You can look in soo many games, both of them hold the ball up and then when they try to play it, it’s just a waste. No wonder Babel has been on the bench so much, because Riera seems to be a great passer, and especially a great crosser of the ball, and seems to be on the same wavelength as Gerrard and Torres. This is another thing Babel lacks in his game, perhaps if he was to be played in a strikers role, then the comparisons to Henry might be seen, but when you’ve got the best striker in the world ahead of you in the pecking order, there’s harly going to be much chance of that role offered to him. Finally, the only person that has ruined Ryan Babel is himself, simply because in too many occasions, whether they have been from the start of the game, or off the bench, he just hasn’t delivered what so ever. I mean a few goals here and there is expected, look at Benayoun for an example of that, but he just doesn’t seem to be cut out for this league. Maybe an italian club will snap him up, and because of the old fogey’s that are drowning out Serie A, he may be of some effect, by using his pace to get past them, but simply because they’re waiting for their senior citizens bus pass!
April 22nd, 2009 @ 06:35Interesting reading the offended Liverpool fans on here. How dare someone have a go at Benitez….the player is rubbish!
Now reading Liverpool fans on here and on many other sites over the last year:
So is Kuyt
So is Aurelio
So id Arbeloa
So is Lucas
So is Benayoun
So is Dossena
So was Crouch
So was Voronin
In fact Liverpool fans have been furious at Benitez sticking with Lucas and to a lesser extent Dossena.
Babel on the othet hand, one of their more expensive and most promising signings of the last 2 years has been given little chance to prove himself. Benitez is a poor man manager. He tried to blame the Agger saga on the club not being quick enough with a new transfer. We now know that was a red herring. The player is unhappy at not being picked. Unreasonable maybe, but it’s Benitez’s job to manage the situation.
Yet how dare someone else criticise Benitez! The same Benitez that the majority of Liverpool fans withdrew their support for after the Boro defeat 2 months ago!!
Gotta love the scousers.
April 23rd, 2009 @ 13:17so now that we’re winning, you’re back? where were you when we lost a few?
April 23rd, 2009 @ 14:25@Ahmed: On holidays! Didn’t you see my previous post. I timed it to coincide with the international break as much as possible!
And we only lost 2! I was on after the Liverpool game…feeling sheepish it must be said!
