A very good and fair article Andy. However you spoil the accuracy right at the end by referring to Hull City as being a HUMBERSIDE club.

Humberside was the name of a district imposed upon the citizens of East Yorkshire and North Lincolnshire in 1974. It was disliked by our residents so much that, after a 22 year battle, the county of Humberside was ABOLISHED and the original county titles were restored.

Kingston upon Hull is a city and unitary authority area in the EAST RIDING of YORKSHIRE. Kindly refer to the correct title in your future articles!

Nice article. It's great to see some new blood in the Prem doing so well, but I am already worried about a sophmore slump. Hopefully Phil Brown can work to attract more high-clibre players to Hull.

Cheers to Phil Broon and Hull. It is absolutely refreshing to see a club do this. Reading were similar to years ago. It will be interesting to see how it plays out for Hull, they've already seured 150% of the points Derby did all last season.

Steve - almost perfectly correct. The game v Rotherham in 1949 drew over 49,000 fans ("old" 3rd Div Record) and when we won promotion in 1965-1966 we did so with an average crowd of 25,000. The crowd at the Boxing Day game v Millwall was officially around 44k but was closer to 50k as Tom Furness (Head Gatekeeper - and my Godfather) opened the gates before the kick-off as there were huge queues at the turnstiles and he wished to prevent a disaster. That may have actually beaten the Rotherham crowd. The record for a Hull-Rovers RL game is mid-20k's (Wembley Cup Final apart) and their average crowds have historically been substantially lower than the Tigers.

Nice article, except for the bit about the locals caring little about the football team. It was only in relatively recent times when local support dwindled after year on year of under-achievement and mismanagement, resulting in the heinous David Lloyd's attempt to rape the club of its assets.
A cursory look at the history books will tell you that City held the record for a 3rd Division attendance (45,000) and crowds of 20-30,000 were commonplace until the mid 70s. City's record crowd, by the way, is 55,000. Compare that with the 2 rugby clubs, neither of whom have ever come close to achieving those numbers.
