This is a big step for Ireland. One thing that may not be reported outside of Ireland is that the majority of Trapattoni's wages will be payed by businessman Denis O'Brien. Fair play Denis! The team was highly unorganised and lacked stability under Steve "Stan" Staunton. Some ridiculious team selections such as putting right back Joey O'Brien in midfield against Germany in a crucial qualifying game. With players like Richard Dunne, Robbie Keane and Shay Given we should definitly make it to South Africa.

He reminds me of some sort of dictator on the youtube link!

Good appointment I think. Eire have the potential to do well and it would be good to see somebody unlock it. Staunton had defeats like 5-2 in Cyprus and, with all due respect, the Irish are much better than that.

I should have added that Mr. Trapattoni was born on 17 March 1939.

St. Patrick's Day. :-)

just added the quotes and info from the press conference.

Interesting to note that:

1) Trap's English is very good

2) He wants an Irish connection, and the first name on THAT list is Arsenal Academy Director Liam Brady.

Brady will be an excellent choice for Trap, and I doubt that Arsene will stop him if he wants to be a part of it (that's a big IF though, since the Arsenal job is quite demanding - all jokes aside).

I was about to say - Lippi for Scotland!

I happen to think that the Irish have a more balanced squad and greater team spirit than England do. I expect to see them at the next world cup.

The Irish have made an excellent appointment in terms of experience and quality - now all they need are players who can do the job...

Great appointment for the Irish I think. What is it with Italian managers in their sixties and the British Isles?

If I was John Toshack, George Burley or Nigel Worthington and I saw Arrigo Sacchi or Marcelo Lippi in the stands, I would get very worried!
