Gilberto should stay as Arsenal captain
Football managers see the players a lot more than we do – they’re there every single day in training, we see them 90 minutes a week, and that too if we manage to catch the game on TV or not.
So to think that you’d know better than the Arsenal manager would be ridiculous.
But some things are just too obvious to be ignored, and at the end of the day it’s your performances on the pitch that matter, not how well you do in training.
Gilberto, for my money, has emerged as the new leader in the Arsenal squad. He is humble, he is hard working and he grows with added responsibility. He’s part of the boys, despite being older than most of them.
He’s not the best midfielder in the world, and ideally Arsenal would be better off buying a new midfielder next summer (or waiting on Diaby to see if he can move up and take over the mantle). But he is (on limited evidence, I must admit), a better captain than Henry, and considering Arsenal’s current predicament in the League, he’s the right man for leading them out of this mess.
Make the change permanent – bring Henry back when he’s fit, but keep Gilberto as Arsenal captain.

Gilberto is an excellent player; it is just that he does a lot of the work that doesn’t get the newspaper headlines. His passing is not great but his defensive contribution is immense. It was a monster performance by him on Sunday at The Bank of Russia.
There is no way that the captaincy can be taken away from Thierry. Such a put down would humiliate him so much, he would either leave or go into a perpetual sulk. Lest you have forgotten, he is still arguably the best player ever to play for Arsenal, our record goalscorer, one of the top three players in the world and is vital to Arsenal for the next 4 or 5 years. I agree that Gilberto is a better on-field captain. What Arsene needs to do is to encourage Gilberto, in his role as vice captain, to be more involved in directing things on the field – but not replacing Thierry. While TH14 is still the official captain, I don’t imagine there would be too much of a problem with that.

December 12th, 2006 @ 16:19Gilberto is a good leader, and is one of the best holding midfielders in the world today. His current performances are going a long way in steadying the ship at Arsenal. Deserves all the credit he gets for that. Should’ve had the MOTM award at Stamford Bridge on Sunday.

He has that strengh that neddn def.mid. and I think he can give a very good long pass. How about to make him captain? I think it’s a good idea. He can lead the team make them be together. And i think in future Fabregas can replace him at hte role of the captain. i want to see him at this positin now but he is too young and he can’t carry so much weight on his shoulder
December 13th, 2006 @ 22:05It is really a hard thing to decide. To me both players deserve to be full captains. If I was involved in decision making board of Arsenal, I would not elect TH14 to captain the lads on grounds that TH14 would be bothered a lot with minor gaggle mistakes and therefore would not be free. Such a dangerous striker needed to be free from blames. In fact TH14 was overloaded. To balance the weight Gilberto should be the Full Captain in other Tournaments and then leave TH14 to man Premier League.
