Germany 2006 - First Round Review
The first round of matches at Germany 2006 concluded tonight with the final second round berths being decided in the favour of France and Switzerland. Let’s look at some of the interesting stats from the action so far.
A fantastic 117 goals have been scored in the first round, by 93 different scorers. Despite this avalanche of goals, it’s surprising that not a single player bagged a hat-trick.
In terms of attack, Germany, Spain, and Argentina lead the charts, having scored 8 goals each. Brazil are just behind the leading trio, with 7 goals.
A very honourable mention must go to the well-organized unit that is the Swiss defence. The Swiss tonight became the only team to go through to the second round without conceding a single goal at this World Cup. Well done!
As far as goalscoring charts are concerned, German Miroslav Klose leads the chase for the Golden Boot with 4 goals. Fernando ‘el Nino’ Torres of Spain is just behind with three.
A few days ago, we started tracking the number of goals each club’s players scored at the World Cup. At the end of the first stage, Arsenal and Chelsea lead that group with 7 goals each being scored by their players at the big tournament.
These are the upcoming Second Round fixtures:
June 24. Germany v Sweden.
June 24. Argentina v Mexico.
June 25. England v Ecuador.
June 26. Italy v Australia.
June 26. Switzerland v Ukraine.
June 27. Brazil v Ghana.
June 27. Spain v France. (Saving the best for last, eh?!)
