Newcastle United midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum is apparently closing in on a move to Premier League club Liverpool.

The Dutch international wants to leave the Championship outfit in order to play at a higher level and would love the chance to play at Anfield next season.

After a deal for Piotr Zielinski fell through, Klopp switched his attentions to the Newcastle midfielder and the Reds are willing to pay top dollar for his services now.

It is understood that Newcastle are holding out for a fee of around 27 million pounds and Liverpool are hoping to settle for something closer to the 20 million mark.

Telegraph are reporting that the Championship side are prepared to accept a player plus cash deal as Rafa Benitez fancies a reunion with his former player Lucas Leiva. The Brazilian is not a starter at Liverpool and is likely to be offered an important role at Newcastle.

The report also adds that Lucas could be offered the club captaincy if he decides to join Newcastle.

The Brazilian midfielder has been a loyal servant for almost a decade now and the time is right for him to move on. The 29 year old has struggled to convince Klopp and at his age, he is hardly going to improve and force himself into the manager’s plans.

A move to a mid-table Premier League side or the Championship would be ideal for him now.

Finally, Telegraph also confirm that Wijnaldum’s transfer to Liverpool should be finalised before the end of the week.

Meanwhile, Augsburg defender Ragnar Klavan completed his medical yesterday and should be announced as a Liverpool player later today.
