Genoa pulls off a real coup by signing Portuguese international

Italian club Genoa have officially unveiled their latest recruit Miguel Veloso. The 24 year old has been heavily linked with a host of top European sides for a number of seasons but it is The Rossoblu who has grabbed his signature from Sporting Lisbon.

The highly rated anchorman will cost the Italians €9 million with Alberto Zapater moving in the opposite direction. Sporting have structured a deal which will see them receive an extra €500,000 if Genoa achieve European qualification and have also added a sell on clause entitling them to a 20% profit if Veloso is sold on.

An agreement had been reached last Friday for the transfer of both players. Veloso will be joining his compatriot Ricardo at the Stadio Luigi Ferraris who joined from Braga last month for €4million.

Veloso’s decision to join Genoa included a number of factors – the history of the club, playing in Serie A, and his meeting with the club chairman Enrico Preziosi”

“I came to Genoa with the desire to do well, help the club and continue professional growth. Playing in Italy, in a club full of history, is important.”

“The decision to come to Genoa I gained after meeting the president. The economic aspect? Not decisive.”

He has a real affection with the club he is departing where he has spent a decade maturing into the player his today. Veloso made a total of 136 appearances for The Lions netting 13 goals.

“I feel a little sadness. I am leaving the club that made me, both as a player and as a man, so I feel some sadness.”

“Sporting is the club that gave me everything, so had I stayed I would have done so with heart and soul, but as this was not the case, I will try and assert myself in another championship.”

His new club Genoa have made a steady rise back to the top flight of Italian football after gaining promotion in 2007. The signing of yet another top international player emphasis that fact. They have steadily built an efficient side and hope to gatecrash a European spot come next May.
