I'm not saying the gay players don't have any balls, or that gay people don't do any sport. The clubs might not sign an openly gay player, but there are clearly gay players in closet who don't have the balls to come out. It's understandable, they'd get a lot of stick and it might hurt their careers. But if you want this issue to be confronted, you have to get it out there.

As a gay man reading this article I thought it was well balanced. For the record in school and played rugby and was school captian. I stopped when I got into Martial arts and was training 5 a week. so I can assure you gay men have the balls for football but their clubs dont have the ablls for gay players

It's pretty easy to work out which bald, ex-premiership keeper it is.

"once the famous coach decided he feared the power of the media and the affect of a scandal on his team’s dressing-room-unity more than losing one of the best goalkeepers in the world–was brutal."

One of the best in world? I don't think so. And he was 33 when he left said huge club, having not been brilliant for them. I can see the manager getting rid of him for this, he's known as a hardarse on players clubbing, ect.

The stats are there, there has to be several gay footballers in the premiership. They have to have the balls to come out if this issue is ever going to be confronted. How can we fight an invisible problem?

I can name one goalkeeper who is bald, has won almost everything, has had a famous manager and the, after his spell under this manager, went to a big french club before disappearing in almost anonymity. I'm sure most of you can name one, but i think no one can name two. My point with this: who are you protecting with this 'not naming him' in Gallas-style? Only yourself, not the player (unless this details about club, position etc. are all made up)

Apart from that note I think this is a really excellent article, it's a subject most authors and blogs do not dare to touch. Great taboo-breaking stuff

One, I don't think any SL bloggers would show up and Two, I'm pretty sure they'd let me burn on the stake for the fun of it :)

Fair enough Ahmed.....but then again.... that could get huge publicity for Soccerlens.
Picture the scene: Ahmed led into the dock in handcuffs. A large mob of Soccerlens bloggers, having turned up in support, break into a raucous chorus of: "Get into them!"

The judge arrives to a chorus of: " Who's the bastard in the black!?....quickly followed by: "Who's the pig in the wig!?

And if you were convicted we'd definitely support you with: "Going down, going down, going down.....

All in all it could be a top day out!

If I knew how to do those smiley things I'd do one!

Brian,

The 'protection' was for legal reasons. One, I don't want to start an inflammatory war between rival club fans and two, I don't want to be sued by the player. Plus the story itself stands strongly without naming the player.

Ahmed

PS - for those of you who participate in the SL forums, Ivor goes by the handle of bobotonto. Nice work mate, very good article.
